THE ANNUAL Republican Sinn Fein commemoration or the execution of Liam Mellowes will take place in Galway and Athenry this Sunday, december 12. The ceremonies will start with a wreath-laying at the Liam Mellowes statue in Eyre Square at l i a m , and a full commemoration will be held in Athenry beginning at 12.15pm. Mellowes was executed on December 8, 1922, in Mountjoy prison in Dublin along with Dick Barrett, Joe McKelvey, and Rory O'Connor, one from each of Ireland's four provinces, for their opposition to the signing of the Treaty with England. Mellowes, who had been elected as a TD for Galway, had also led the Easter Rising in Galway on Easter Monday, 1916, one of the few places outside Dublin to take part in the Rising - under his com mand, men from Galway gathered in Athenry and established their headquarters at the nearby Moyode castle where they held out until the Dublin Volunteers surren dered.
