IRISH SCHOOL CHILDREN MAY H E L P TO W R I T E WORDS O F EUROPEAN ANTHEM P o s t - P r i m a r y s c h o o l chil d r e n in Ireland have been asked to take p a r t in a competition to write t h e w o r d s of t h e n e w E u r o p e a n a n t h e m , t h e m u s i c for whi c h w a s s e l e c t e d b y t h e Co u n c i l of E u r o p e l a s t y e a r . The Council chose the pre l u d e t o t h e " O d e fo J o y " from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. T h i s a n t h e m is n o w pla y e d at m a n y E u r o p e a n fun ctions, a n d was h e a r d in Dublin Castle last J u l y at the European Youth Forum Prize-giving. T h e Irish Committee for the E u r o p e a n Schools Day has n o w a s k e d I r i s h post p r i m a r y pupils to write one or m o r e stanzas for the anthem. T h e words can b e in Irish, or in any other European language, or in Latin. The winning entries from each country will eventually be judged by t h e C o u n c i l of E u r o p e . H e l p i n g to write a t e x t for t h e n e w a n t h e m is j u s t o n e of s e v e r a l E . E . C . a c t i v ities in w h i c h I r i s h school children may take part. F o r t h e less poetic t h e r e is a c o m p e t i t i o n t o m a k e a m o d e l of a p i e c e of s c i l p ture or m o n u m e n t symbol ising E u r o p e a n co-opera tion or union. Schools have also b e e n invited to p r e p a r e a special e d i t i o n of a s c h o o l m a g a zine to m a r k I r e l a n d ' s en try into the European Communities. This maga zine should be suitable for distribution to schools in Europe.
