SOCCER
T h e past year h a s been one Of continued progress a n d expansion for the game u n d e r t h e jurisdiction of the Galway and District C o m m i t t e e . F o u r new clubs registered with t h e committee namely Wolves, Collegians, D e v o n Celtic a n d St. Bernard's Utd. and Abbcyknockmoy. However at national level t h e Galway teams did not fare too well, t h e Galway League lost the coveted Oscar T r a y n o r T r o p h y w h e n beaten by the Leinster Senior L e a g u e in the third r o u n d . Galway Bohemians were defeated by St. Patrick's C . Y . M . , D u b l i n , in the sixth r o u n d of t h e F.A.I. Junior Cup and U . C . G . were eliminated by Waterford Bohemians in the fifth r o u n d of the Youth C u p . I n the provincial competi tions Bohemians had a great two goals to nil victory over Sligo Collegians to recapture the Connacht Junior C u p a n d in the Y o u t h C u p West U t d . gained their first provincial success in beating O u r L a d y of L o u r d e s , Sligo, at T e r r y land Park by the odd goal in three.

O.L.B.C. P a s t v. P r e s e n t T h i s weekend's m a i n R u g b y attraction is the annual O . L . B . C . Past v. Present game in the Sportsground o n S u n d a y next at 2.30 p . m . Playing for t h e coveted Beatty t r o p h y , which was presented t h r e e season's ago by P a d d y Beatty, the current I n t e r p r o vincial R u g b y Referee, both teams field strong sides. T h e Present side having a very successful season this year, can expect a w a r m reception next Sunday w h e n they meet a forceful Past side which i n cludes four senior i n t e r p r o vincial players and three J u n i o r Introprovincials. T o m Burke (Wegians & C o n n a c h t ) is captain of t h e Past X V which also includes J. O'Shaughnessy, B. Langan, O . H o r a n a n d J. G l y n n . I t will need all the powers of F r a n k O ' L o u g h l i n ' s leader ship to keep his team calm, as the Past team will strive for a convincing win. H o w ever the Present side, noted for its determination a n d foward mobility, are certainly not without scoring potential, as t h e y ' h a v e shown this year. T h e Present's only Senior Interprovincial, Barthly N o l a n , will be ably assisted by such players as T . C u r r a n , D . C r o n i n , L . Casserley a n d M . McDonagh. This annual fixture k n o w n for its high standard of R u g b y , should m o r e than compensate for t h e feeling of frustration of t h e spectarors, who are g u a r a n teed a good game, n e x t S u n day.

T h e T e s t s were very livan. simple, non-car damaging a n d very entertaining to the large g r o u p of onlookers. E a c h car competed in the 4 tests a n d strong opposition from the t h e winning team were E a m o n S o u t h e r n ladies who defeated Cotter a n d Donal Joyce in the University College, D u b l i n , G r a n a d a with 175 marks lost. in this current competition I n second place were J. Eamonn Campbell back play at t h e m o m e n t is of the highest calibre. H i s choice would have b e e n p o p ular too. W e wish a speedy recovery t o t h e well built Clifden m a n , w h o was shot in t h e s h o u l d e r while o n G a r d a d u t y in Cork at C h r i s t mas. T h e n we have o u r only All Star of 1972 T o m m y J o e G i l m o r e . H e had a better year in '71 t h a n in '72. Still his first half display in t h e replay v. R o s c o m m o n was vintage G i l m o r e . A n d J i m m y D u g g a n (another old favour ite) has yet to receive a G a l way award. T h e m i n o r s w o u l d have their s u p p o r t e r s t o o . If t h e r e is a better p r o s p e c t i n t h e county t h a n K e v i n C l a n c y I haven't seen h i m . W e m a y have another T o m S u l l i v a n here. O n l y for his d i s play of 'solitis' in t h e s e m i final v. Cork Morgan H u g h e s would be a n o t h e r obvious candidate b u t h e is a player of class a n d we will hear m o r e about h i m t o o . Liam Sammon too has b u r s t back into form a n d h e l p e d in n o small way t o power F r . Griffin's to a n o t h e r county title win. The Hurlers N o one really has any quibble w i t h T e d M u r p h y ' s selection. H e is a g r e a t hearted player a n d was t h e powerhouse of Castlegar's r e t u r n to t h e t o p . B u t m a n y of t h e five U n d e r 21 w i n n i n g side m i g h t just as easily have b e e n selected. T a k e I g g y C l a r k e , t h e captain now developing into a fine senior. T h e seniors p l u m b e d t h e d e p t h s against Kilkenny after a good start b u t they gained p r o m o t i o n to Division I of the L e a g u e a n d as always P a d h r a i c N i l a n d was his steady self. T h e Carrolls All Star selectors have honoured J o h n W a l s h with his recent selection for t h e San Francisco t r i p a n d this h o n o u r is well d u e a very wholehearted player. J o h n F a u l , too is a steady full back a n d it is a great pity t h a t John Connolly is not b r o u g h t from t h e U . S . for t h e major games. Castlegar do it with success. Offaly a n d D o n e g a l d o it for t h e major championship games. W h y not Galway. Johnny McMahon B u t as J o h n n y M c M a h o n {Connacht Tribune) says t h e r e is n o t h i n g b e t t e r t h a n c o n t o r v e r s y t o create interest. MY STARS OF 197? M y c o m m e n t o n t h e relative, merits of M a u r i c e B u r k e a n d J o e W a l d r o n in last week's issue his excited c o m m e n t , some agreeable. T o every m a n his view. As I said a week ago, M a u r i c e B u r k e would b e m y choice for t h e Galway Gaelic Football Star, of 1972, b u t t h e n as J o h n C o m y n said in last S u n d a y ' s Independent, w h e n c o m m e n t ing o n t h e T e x a c o A w a r d s not being his choices, I h a v e n o axe to grind over J o e W a l d r o n ' s selection. H e was a fine captain of a very good U n d e r 21 All-Ireland w i n n i n g team a n d played a star game in the final.
