N CHICK Gillen's gents hairdressers on Tuesday there was some talk about John Monroe's horse 'Rusheen Bay' and its mysterious owners the downtown syndicate". She raced in the 5.35 on Monday and did not do very well. Someone remarked that they were still looking for] her. A picture of the syndicate trudging through the fields looking for the horse was quitely dwelt upon. Chick Gillen, boxing trainer extraordinaire, hair stylist, and one time assistant doorman at Seapoint Ballroom recalled earlier days when the races were a two-day event, but few people slept for the 48 hours. Vast crowds descended on the alcohol-free ballrooms in Salthill, Seapoint, and the Hanger. Both have long since been superseded by the bar in the disco, but in those days only minerals were served. Lead doorman. Joe Coyne, developed an eagle-eye for spotting a bottle bulging in a pocket. "Leave your guns in here," he would say, but was always careful to put the owner's name on the bottle to be collected later. Although the race nights were the climax of thel Summer season, the dancing season was every night for| 17 wonderful weeks. Men and women cycled from as far as Headford or Kinvara often with dancing shoes and a clean white shirt or blouse in a parcel on the carrier. Brylcreem was a favourite with men, which was often topped up as the night progressed. Women had to wear dresses; jeans and slacks were not allowed. And there was no hanky panky. Ballroom owner Noel Finan would tap a man on the shoulder if he thought he was too closely locked into his partner and gesture with his finger to move apart. Everyone had a ball. There was no hanging about. Immediately the first dance started at 8pm everyone got] up to dance and continued whirling until about 3am.

A spokesperson for the Salthill Garda Station said they did not yet know the cause of the crash. The accident occurred on a straight stretch of road and involved two cars travelling in opposite directions. assault
by Keith Kelly A FILE is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions following an alleged assault on a man in a city centre pub at the weekend. The man, who is in his mid-20s and believed to be from the Cork/Kerry region, was struck in the head and knocked unconscious. He was taken by ambulance to UCHG, and has since made a complaint to the gardai. A spokesperson for Mill Street Garda Station says they are investigating the incident, which took place on Saturday night. public in identifying a body which was discovered in sea near Oranmore Tuesday morning. Swimmers defy health warnings
After two consecutive tests showed traces of the bacteria in the bay's waters, moves were made by the local authority to make the public aware of the risks of bathing in Galway Bay. Notices were posted at beaches at Ballyloughane, Grattan, Blackrock and Silver Strand to inform members of the public of the presence of salmonella in the waters. The city manager denied, however, that levels of bacteria were "significant". The Western Health Board, however, has moved to assure people that the risk of contracting food poisoning through bathing in Galway Bay is "very low". "The risk of contracting food poisoning cannot be quantified because there is not much data on the link between the presence of salmonella in sea water and illness," said one official at Continued from page one the health board yesterday. "However, the health board would presume that the risk is small because most cases of illness caused by salmonella poisoning have been linked with food," she continued. Meanwhile the Western Health Board has so far failed to identify the source of the outbreak of salmonella which struck almost 50 army personnel following a barbecue at Renmore barracks two weeks ago. The health board issued a statement earlier this week saying the infection originated in an orange mousse which was served at the event, however the ingredient which caused the outbreak of food poisoning has not been identified. Those affected by the outbreak are said to be recovering satisfactorily. However a further 28 people were affected by another suspected occurrence of salmonella at the weekend in a north Clare seafood restaurant. Nine people were hospitalised for treatment and the proprietor of the restaurant voluntarily closed the restaurant temporarily.

The doorman was Michael John Burke who always wore a rose and a red dickey-bow. Michael John had helped defeat Hitler and legend had it that somehow he managed to get on the reviewing platform with Generals Eisenhower and Montgomery during the VE Day parade in London. His young daughter famously asked, "who are those men with

On the other side of town it only cost two shillings and six pence to get in to Seapoint. Mike Collins, a blacksmith, helped out on the door when it was busy. He was a gentle soul but with incredible strength. He would bodily lift any troublemaker clear off the ground and ask sweetly: * Chick Gillen: Memories Have you a problem, 'Seapoint sonny'.'" There rarely was.
