ne of the smallest townlands in the parish of Castlegar is Milestone, contained in only one and a half acres of land. It takes its name from a large boulder nudged into its present position by the entrance of the Holy Family school on the Renmore to Galway road, during some ancient ice movement. Every schoolchild in the city knows that it is exactly one mile from that spot to Williamsgate Street in Galway. It is a stone with a story to tell. The famous 1651 map of Galway describes the road from Eyre Square to this spot as "the little lane which leads to Lynch's rock known as Clogh an Lface". Nobody knows who this Lynch was but 54 years before the map was drawn, the adventurous Red Hugh O'Donnell rested there with his troops after he h a d successfully s a c k e d the N o r m a n town of Athenry. He sent a message to the Galway mayor demanding food and drink for his men. He offered to pay for the supplies but threatened to attack the city if his request was refused. The mayor at the rime, show ing the same sang-froid as recent mayors displayed to howling protestors told b u n in polite terms what he could d o with h i s demands. Red Hugh launched an attack but Galway was t o o well defended and Red Hugh, probably embarrassed by his failure, and hence his name, went home to Sligo. he story of Clogh an Lince is only one of the many historical anecdotes in Archdeacon Padraic 6 Laoi's i n f o r m a t i v e 'History of i Castlegar Parish', which was J published recently. Although its sporting heroes are legendary, Castlegar is not the mighty parish i t o n c e w a s . There are wonderful stories of the rowing triumphs of the Emmetts Rowing club in the 1920s. These were ordinary men with a natural talent for rowing who wiped the smile from the snobby faces of the established rowing clubs of the day who had no place for the men from M ion loch. In a sensational cli max to successive club victories the Emmetts narrowly defeated Trinity to win the coveted Blue Riband of Irish Rowing, the sport's highest award. By chance that year, 1929, t h e regatta was held in Galway. Every man, woman and child in the parish lined the river banks and t o u t e d until they were hoarse. The parish priest Fi Fagan stood beside the inning post up to his vater praying for victory 'ith his head bowed. Women's Health

Directory

T h e Irish Women's Health Directory, the first of its kind in Ireland, was launched last week. As one in five Irish women will be aged 60 o r over by t h e year 2010, this d i r e c t o r y will act a s a resource guide for older Irish women to identify support groups a n d access informa tion relevant to their health needs. "This comprehensive directory, containing information on 27 support groups around Ireland, aims to provide infor mation on diseases that become prevalent in a woman's later life - osteoporosis, coronory heart disease, cancer, depression and Alzheimer's disease. Elimination of risJwfactors for these common diseases, prevention, early detection and treatment are all only possible through high quality information," commented Dr Maire Milner, director of the Menopause Clinic at the Rotunda Hospital. The directory, sponsored by an educational grant from Eli Lilly, is available by sending a stamped (45p) self addressed envelope to Lilly Women's Health Bureau, 'Casita', Saval Park Crescent, Dalkey, Co Dublin.
