THE WEATHERMAN
FORECAST:
A return to mild, unsettled weather is expected after this present cold spell.
T R A D I T I O N A L : Dec 12 - Finnian ofClonard Finnian, one of the great sixth century churchmen when Christianity in Ireland broke the mould of paganism and flowered in an extraordinary way. It was a time of myths and miracles and the beginning of the great monastic movement. Finnian was a Leinsterman who became both an abbot and bishop whose most important achievement was the establishment of a monastery at Clonard, Co Meath. By all accounts Finnian was a practical and saintly man and Clonard attracted 3,000 disciples during his lifetime. He was known as the Teacher of Saints and is famed as the "Master of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland." These were Kieran of Saigher, Kieran of Clonmacnoise, Brendan the Navigator, Brendan of Birr, Colm of Iona, Colin of Terryglass (Feast day Dec 13), Molaise, Canise, Riadhan, Mobhi, Sinnell, and Ninidh of Inismacsaint. Finnian died of plague in 549. The old monastery survived Danish raids, native strife and Norman agression until it was finally repressed and closed in the 16th century. All that remains today in the Protestant church are an old grey marble baptismal font and a head-shaped stone.
