Women Warned Of Blood Danger
WEST OF Ireland patients who received blood or blood products in the past and believe they may be at risk of contract ing Hepatitis C are being urged to contact their family doctor or hospital. The call comes from Western Health Board member, Dr Diarmuid McLoughlin (Mayo), who believes some people who received blood during the danger periods (1977 to '78 and 1991 to '94) still have not come forward for test ing. Councillor Margaret Cox told this month's meeting of the WHB that some 77 women in the west had received anti-D during these periods. While it was not the WHB's responsibil ity, it should write to them and check if they have been contacted by the Blood Transfusion Service Board. Eamonn Hannan, the chief executive of the WHB, said would not be happy to do this as the board was not responsible for the BTSB's work. The matter was between the BTSB and the persons concerned, he said. i Cllr Eithne Quinn (Rose) said she appreciated his view but believed as a health authority, the WHB was responsible for its patients. Cllr Joe Burke (Tuam) said Cox's proposal was reasonable. He wanted the board to write to the anti-D recipients and ask them to confirm if the BTSB had been in touch with them. Cox said she was not satis fied that people in this region who could have con tracted Hepatitis C had all been contacted by the BTSB. "It's our responsibil ity as a board to do every thing we can to ensure that everv individual is contact ed."
