COMMENT
T H E RIGHT T O KNOW SEVERAL events have come together during the past week to make it one of the most dramatic and possibly o n e of the most dangerous in the history of the state. We cannot say how long the crisis will last or when the more immediate and urgent issues will be resolved. Assuming that a revolutionary situation does not arise, many of the major departures from what we have come to expect in a democracy may take a long time to resolve. The amendment to the Offences Against the State Act has been pub lished which alters fundamentally the approach to the establishment of a citizen's guilt. The Irish Special Branch have been engaged in a gun-battle in--of all places!--a hospital in the centre of Dublin. A man has been convicted in a no-jury court on the evidence of a tape-recorded interview. U p to 40 people have been injured in a cinema explosion.

stand they took. We note, and disapprove of the unbecoming way in which the nine members in question--including a former first lady of the land-- were removed from office. The correspondence between Donal O Morain and Mr. Collins makes interesting reading. So will the "View of Irish Broadcasting" document if and when it is published. It is unfair to judge the ability of the new Authority at this time. Meanwhile the potential of the national broadcasting network has been seriously undermined. Galway licence holders have had B.B.C. Radio only to find out about the national crisis over the past week-end. If the trouble in R.T.E. is not resolved quickly and fairly, the long term prospects for broadcasting, and media freedom in general are bleak indeed.

Letters to the Editor
P R O T E S T PETITION Dear Sir, As many people are deeply concerned about the proposed closure of the Maternity Unit of Calvary Hospital I feel that we must now take some action to express this. I am organising a petition protesting about the closure and I appeal, through the courtesy of your newspaper, to all those who are interested to join me, and I should be grateful to anyone who can help in its organisation to contact me as soon as possible. I realise that it would be im possible to meet everyone and I ask all those who do not have the opportunity to sign the petition itself to send me their protest by letter or post card in the very near future. These will be forwarded with the petition to the Western Health Board. Needless to say, a large number of protests is essential if we wish to be effective, and I appeal again to all who wish to save Calvary to join me by giving me their support. Yours sincerely, Miss Wears Lippa, Spiddal, Co. Galway. (Tel. 83127).

CALVARY HOSPITAL Dear Editor, I wish, through your paper, to protest about the proposed closure of Calvary Hospital. As an ex-nurse and ex-patient A warm, inviting, smoke filled room; of the obstetric department I would ask the Western Health Enhanced by the glow of candle light, soft enough to be romantic; Board to take a long look at the situation before they allow Close friends, gathered together; this hospital to close.
