The Right Time For Everything (But Not Just Now)

Patriarchy in Action?

e should begin by saying that we have every sympa thy for those whose job it is to oversee the smooth running of our city. As any newspaper reader will be all too aware, it sometimes seems as if any suggestion to do any thing at all - whether it be a sewage disposal facility or renaming a road - causes citizens to reach for their pens and object. We would also wish to be as fair as possible to those who are among those who do object, from time to time, to plans, propos als and actions that they see as harming the city they love. Which, to continue our even-handedness, does not mean to sug gest that those who oversee the running of Gaiway do not love it, but are motivated by an obscure and unfathomable desire to do her wrong, "being so majestical". Of course not. However, considering how frequently objections are made against one thing or another planned, proposed or executed by the City Manager, for example, there is clearly room for improvement in what we might describe as local government-cit izen relations. There have, in fact, been too many instances of conflicts brought up simply because those who were anxious about some step being taken - a sewage treatment plant, a new hotel, a park, a shopping centre, etc. - did not know the full story. If there is one thing that has become startlingly clear in recent years it is the absolute necessity of consultation among all par ties to some initiative. If a new building is being mooted for Gaiway, then everyone should be in possession of all the facts from the beginning. For if they are not, the conditions are ripe for trouble. Galwegians will have noticed the odd cage-like structures that have arisen recently in Quay St., Cross St., and High St. However, their curiosity turned to rage when it became clear that the Corporation was about to embark on a major project of repaving one of the busiest and most celebrated areas in Gaiway, and that the work was set to continue well into the tourist season. The crisis is over. The City Manager has agreed to postpone the job until a latter, less busy time of the year. Rage has been quiet ed and life can go on. Yet, if some simple consultation between the people of these streets and the Corporation had taken place earlier, this poten tially divisive situation need never have arisen. Gaiway is growing at what some would regard as an alarming rate and there is no prospect of its slowing down. It is time for all those concerned in the future development of our still lovely city to ensure that dialogue and constructive consultation become the norm and not the exception. For the sake of all of us.
