RAVE" RAID
Gardai in Galway have made a number of drug seizures follow ing a raid o v e r the weekend.
Four people were detained on Saturday night following the discovery of cannabis, speed and ecstasy in their pos session. The four, three men in their early 20's from Dublin and another woman in her late 20's from the Midlands, were brought to the Garda Station in Gort for questioning. It is believed the four were travelling to a 'rave' being held outside Kinvara four miles away and been to the vil lage for the Cruinniu na mBad festival. This is the first time there have been any such arrests from the festival according to a spokesman at Mill Street Garda Station. "This is the first time any drug arrests have been made in connection with the festival. The four people arrested had attended the festival and were on their way to a rave four miles away. They were found to be carrying small amounts of cannabis, ecstasy and speed, which they said was for personal use". The four were later released and are expected to appear in Galway District Court in the next few months on charges of possession. The arrests follow recent criticism by Senator Frank Fahey who claimed that the fight against drugs in Galway was severely hampered by the lack of manpower and resources. He then made an appeal to the Minister for Justice, Ms. Nora Owen to boost Garda numbers in Galway, especial ly the Drug Squad.

NO "EPIDEMIC"
This week in a letter to Senator Fahey, the Minister said that all members of the Gardai are empowered to deal with drugs offences as part of their daily duties and that the Gardai, Customs and Excise and the Naval Service were working closely together to prevent drug importa tion. She also said there were 19 Detective Gardai and three Dective Sergeants that had drug related crime "high on their priority list". She informed Senator Fahey that she had received assur ances from the Garda authorities that the drug situation in Galway was by "no means of epidemic proportions". "There is virtually no evidence of hard drugs found despite widespread searches throughout the city. They [the Garda authorities] will continue to monitor the situa tion and take action as appropriate," she said. Senator Fahey was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
