ARTICLE 4 4

Dear Sir,
Mr. Quigley's letter, re Article 44 was indeed an emotional thunderstorm which casts a degree of sus picion on why he will so ada mantly vote No on Rrefeendum day. He reminds us of the bitter ness of the Penal Laws, and says that he owes it to our dead ancestors to Vote No. I would suggest that our ancestors suffered, fought and died, not to attain religious dominance, but to achieve freedom and equality. The past is to be remem bered, not re-lived, and our ancestors are to be rememb ered as the founders of our freedom, and not to be re membered as oppressed big ots by a "holier than thou" moralist, who wishes to re verse the progress of their struggle, by demanding reli gious dominance over his compatriots. Are these the qualities of humility, charity, and love, Mr. Quigley? Are we not to forgive those who have tres passed against us ? If you are to vote No on Referendum day, I suggest you find an excuse other than vengeance.

Dear Sir,
As a result of the over whelming response to my letter to you last week, a group of interested people have begun an intensive cam paign in a further effort to save Calvary Hospital. Every body's signature is needed and a door-to-door petition is now under way. We appeal to the people of Galway to give their support in every way possible--by signing them selves or by collecting signa tures. Please do your share. All interested parties are in vited to call to the Caravan, which will be parked on the Square on Friday and Sat urday next. H. Wears, Spiddal. M. Connolly, Taylor's Hill. S. McCarthy, Newcastle. B. RAHOON FLATS

Dear Sir,
At the recent Annual Gen eral Meeting of the Salthill and District Parents' Associatiin unanimous concern was expressed at the proposed closure of the Maternity Unit at Calvary Hospital, Renmore. In expressing this concern cognisance was taken of the unique services and devotion of the Blue Nuns and of their medical and nursing staffs to the well-being of Galway over the years; the factors of the rapid growth of Galway and the disabilities of the already inadequate number of hospital beds being further reduced were also taken into account. Additionally, fears were ex pressed as to the growth of medical bureaucracy and the dangers of unnecessary alter native capital costs. Accordingly, advices as to this genuine concern and report are being conveyed to the Blue Nuns, the Medical Committee, the Western Health Board, the Minister for Health, and the Press.

Sir,
Following various visits and interviews with some resi dents of the Rahoon Park Flats, it is evident to me that the housing problem has not been solved--it has deterior ated. T h e majority of the occupants were on the waiting list for years, and finally they got what they wanted--or did they ? There are little or no communal or community fac ilities available. T h e child rens' "playgrounds" consist of "monkey bars" (on which one child was very severely injured recently) were suppos edly made for their enjoy ment. There is central heafing in each flat, it is operated from a control tower which means that no individual can control the heat in his flat. The nearest shop is approx imately a half mile away, a problem for any h'wife with a young family. There are confirmed reports of rats in festing various flats, with the result of unhealthy general living conditions. The hot water system is off at various intervals for days, and sometimes for weeks. There are no telephone facili ties--a most important asset --for the residents. By allow ing Rahoon Park Scheme and similar schemes to be built, by those people who scrimped on community facilities-- people who would never have to live there themselves. Rahoon "housing" scheme has been embittered, not im proved. And have the Catholic Hierarchy anything to say about this ? They will prob ably tell the Rahoon Park Residents "not to worry my good people, you'll all be rewarded in the next life"! But the Church never con demns social inequality in our cantemporary societies, and these are the people who reside in two or three storey upper-class suburban man sions supported by their preached at parishioners. It appears to me that the interest the Church has in the social well-being and welfare of their people is somewhat limited. Would I not be right in saying that by cramming

Dear Sir, Letters the to
I have been reading your correspondents' views on the Newcastle/University Road Junction over the past few months, as well as your own Editorial Comments, and as I use this Junction at least 5 times daily, I also consider myself an "expert" on how it should be negotiated in safety. It appears to me that this junction is now tied up in the Road Traffic Acts--Bye Laws --Amateur and Advanced Motorists views, and other legal jargons, which to mc is only of academic interest. I haven't heard any of your correspondents or advanced motorists, or indeed your own editorial mention the words Politeness and Courtesy. Ap proach this junction, as you should approach all junctions with Politeness and Courtesy, and you will have nothing to worry about. Finally, it is consoling to note that your paper .high lights matters such as this, even though one might be pardoned for believing that there are more serious" matters which could get an airing now and again. Thank you Mr. Editor.

Yours faithfully,
John Fitzgeraid, President, Rockbarton, Salt hill, Galway. FOR SALE AUDI 100 S (2 door) November 1970, 38,000 miles. First class condition. Genuine reason for sale. Ring 3963 after 5 p.m. The Local Planning Author ity, however, assures us that permission has neither been sought nor granted. As parents and residents in Abbeygate Street and district, we strongly object to proce dure and development of this kind. Is the construction suffi ciently sound ? Where are the parking facilities ? It must be remembered that the "Cosy Nook" is one of a block of old three storied buildings, and that Upper Abbeygate Street is a very narrow and busy thoroughfare.

' 4 4 ' AGAIN !

Dear Sir,
Many people don't know what Article 44 is all about, and just don't know how to vote. When in doubt one prays for guidance. It is well also to remember that we are the children of those who stood watch at the Mass Rock, who had property and goods taken from them, who were denied education and so many other things we now take for granted all because of our Faith. English writers, Chesterton and Billoc called it the great miracle of the ages. Now with a stroke of the pen we are asked to down grade what was so dearly bought for us, in terrible suffering by our forefathers. No, let's hope every truehearted Irishman who values our heritage votes a decided " N o " on December 7, the eve of the feast of the Immaculate Conception.
D. MANIFOLD.

L O U G H ATALIA A S IT IS Dr. Cedric Woods, the U.C.G. scientist always with his fingers on the pulses of any threatening pollution to our city amenities, submitted a report on Lough Atalia last weekend. T h e report, results of five months study, shows that despite a certain amount of pollution in the Lough it is nevertheless full of living organisms which render pol lutants innocuous. However, when Galway sewage is con ducted to Mutton Island for dispersal the Lough will im prove even more. But Dr. Woods warns that if the entrance to the Lough is changed and less sea water enters at each tide then the average salt composition of water in the Lough will drop and the result could cause major biological changes which could alio-' en rer duced levels of pollution to overcome the fauna and "kill" the Lough. 1 >: Woods makes the case foi exist ing mouth of Lougi: Ualia to be kept open--w sup ports the Lough A: ia De velopment Associ^' ob jection to a propo* n to alter the existing in.KITH of| the Lough. RESIDENTS OBJECT

Dear Sir,
We believe that the pub licity afforded by your es teemed newspaper would help to clarify and perhaps rectify a matter which is of great concern to us. It appears that considerable alterations are now being made with regard to a licensed premises, known as the "Cosy Nook", Upper Abbcygate St., Galway. These alterations, it seems, are being made with a view to providing a club or recreation centre over the bar.

Yours truly,
Billy Horan, Paddy Hanley, John A. Glynn, John O'Doherty, Frank Ryan, Tommy Forde, Mrs. Nora O'Connor, Nan Cawley, Mrs. Barrett.

people into pre-cast con' rete' slabs--by not altering the housing problem for the benefit of its people- the result will be devastating i.e. dole, jail, children's reforma tories, psychiatric hospitals, desertion, alcoholism, and finally revolt against society. This is a problem which is inevitable, otherwise those responsible will have to taste their own medicine.
