The Same O l d Story Every Year
HELLO! M y name is Dorothy the Donkey but you may call be Dora. I don't like to boast but I'm told that I possess the most beautiful grey coat ever seen on any donkey. My grandm^other^was^a horse so I am very well mannered and civilised. A very strange thing happened to my wonderful coat many years ago, (one thousand, nine hundred and nineOne evening at dusk, while 1 was chewing thoughtfully on some sweet-smelling hay, m y happy daydreams were interrupted by my distraught master bursting into my sta ble and muttering something about going to Bethlehem. "Silly man", I thought. Being a very knowledgeable don key I knew that Bethlehem was very far away. Surely we couldn't go on a journey when my mistresses baby was soon to be born. At dawn the next morning I was saddled up and we left for Bethlehem. The ground was hot, dry and dusty and the sand burned my hooves. By midday we were exhausted, thirsty and my throat felt like sandpaper. After endless hours of travelling we reached Bethlehem. To our dismay at the end of the day we still had not found a place to stay for the night. One innkeeper in particular was extremely rude and said just because King Herod wanted to count his subjects it didn't mean the innkeepers had to run off their feet trying to accommodate people for the night. Stars were twinkling in the sky when we met a kind innkeeper who said that we could stay in his stable for the night. Mary's baby was born that night. I was slightly sur prised because I always thought that babies were small wailing, sobbing bundles of pink but the little child (Mary said she was calling him Jesus,) did not cry once. Shepherds came saying that they were summoned by angles and they brought a lamb for Jesus. Three wealthy wise men came, claiming they were guided by a star. They brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh but they game us some bad news. They told us that King Herod ordered every baby boy bom to be killed. I felt annoyed because I was quite enjoying my idle chit-chat with Donna, (the other donkey in the barn). I did not enjoy talk ing with the sheep as they looked and stared, silly fluffy animals. As for the cow he was common and vulgar so I didn't socialise with him at all. We eventually reached Nazareth and returned to our normal lifestyle. Actually, it was never normal because I knew Jesus must be very special. To return to my coat, a large black cross had miracu lously appeared on my back. Nobody but but I knew that it was where I had carried Mary on the eventful journey to Bethlehem. Eleanor Higgins Scoil San Phrionisias Tirellan Aged 12 years (6th class) Mr. Bowles

But until recent years the custom of killing! a Wren with thorns and taking it from house to house, decked in holly and ribbons, was a common practice. Similar traditions happened in France, England, Wales, and the Isle of Man. In Britain the Wren was hated because he betrayed St. Stephen by hopping on the shoulder of his sleep ing jailer. In Ireland, the poor Wren is supposed to have alerted^ Cromwellian soldiers to an attack by hopping on a drum.
