NATIONAL IMPORTANCE UF TEILIFIS NA GAILLIMHE
UCG Vice President, Gearoid O' Tuathaigh has called for action to make bi-lingualism in Ireland real and valid, rather than simply an aspiration.
Professor O Tuathaigh was speaking at the National Seminar of the Promotion of Irish in Local Authorities, which took place in Gaoth Dobhair, Co. Donegal. The seminar was organis ed by Bord na Gaeilge on behalf of the Steering Group for Irish in Local Govern ment at the Department of the Environment. Its aim was to give local authority representatives an oppor tunity to exchange informa tion, and to discuss the pro motion of Irish locally and nationally. The theme of the seminar was "Irish and Communica tion", and Prof. O Tuathaigh gave the key address. In his talk, he stated that in modern Ireland, most people have at some time to deal with official agents of the state, and local govern ment. " T o the extent that an Irish speaker cannot use Irish in these areas, they are being discrimminated against, and unjustly treated." But there is goodwill in the public domain, which could be tapped to lead to real bilingualism. This is the rationale behind the Govern ment's "Guidlines for Ac tion Programmes in the State S e c t o r " . The im plementation of this is being monitored by Bord na Gaeilge. On the issue of Teilifis na Gaeilge, Prof O Tuathaigh said that "public interest broadcasting is essential to counterbalance the private monopolisation of media by powerful private interests. Teilifis na Gaeilge is a pro ject of such national impor tance that it requires and deserves support from all groups and political par ties."
