TA' HTS PATCHWORK SOCIETY EXHIBITION AT ARTS CENTRE
The annual exhibition by the Western Branch of the Irish Patchwork Society opens this Friday, December 3rd, at Galway Arts Centre, 47 Dominick Street. The exhibition comprises a wide variety of pieces, ranging from large quilts and wall-hangings to smaller, decorative items such as cushions, toys and clothing. Many of the pieces will be for sale, making this exhibition an ideal "hunting ground" in which to track down Christmas presents "with a difference". In conjunction with the exhibition, the Arts Centre will host an illustrated lecture at 47 Dominick Street by Helen Hardesty of the Irish Patchwork Society on the many facts of quilt and patchwork making. This lecture takes place on Saturday, December 11th, at 3.00 p.m. and admission is free. The exhibition itself runs until December 23rd.

Galway Music Group at Arts Centre
Gemshorns, psaltery, crumhorns and glastonbury pipes are just a few of the exotic instruments which will feature in a special Chrtistmas concert that will be given by the Galway Early Music group at Galway Arts Centre, Nun's Island, on Sunday, December 12th at 8.00 p.m.
The group was founded last February by Penny MacBeth, Tracy Harris, Kate MacMaghnuis, Maura O'Croinin and Ann Smith, to perform vocal and in strumental music written before 1600. Their recitals evoke the courtly old world atmosphere of troubadors and minstrals, ladies and lords, feasts and revels. Each member of the group sings and plays several dif ferent i n s t r u m e n t s , in cluding, along with those already mentioned, recorders, fiddles, sym phony (a kind of medieval hurdy-gurdy) and various percussion instruments. Galway Early Music group's concerts are a visual as well as aural feasts, as the group members are attired in histrically accurate period costumes which are made by Penny MacBeth and Maura Croinin, and, as far as possi ble, follow the style of dress which was peculiar to Connacht during the medieval period. Joining Galway Early Music on the night will be two m e m b e r s of Cois Chladaigh, Brendan O'Con nor and Phil L a r k i n . Tickets, for what promises to be a very special concert, can be booked at Galway Arts Centre, 47 Dominick Street (091 65886).

Flying Pigs Blitz Kings Head
It's a blitz! A Flying Pig blitz on the Wizard of Oz! Those madcap Porkers return to The Kings Head with a special Xmas show called " T h e Wizard of O d d " . It opens on Thursday, December 9th, and will run at 1.05 p.m. each day (excluding Sundays) until December 18th. FEB 20TH - MARCH 20TH

The programme was that which he had played first 25 years ago for his Coming Out Concert, and its con tents ranged from the mid-18th to the mid-20th centuries. The Gothic arches of the Aula Maxima seemd to give a preview of the direction of the evening uplifting, heavenly. No wonder one awe-inspired patroness was heard to ex claim " G o d Almighty" after the Beethoven Sonata. The concert opened with Mozart's Piano Concerto in A Major, with all its wonderful variations, and continued with Beethoven's " A p p a s s i o n a t a " . Then came Chopin's Scherzo No.

"A friend in need is a friend indeed". This week someone needs your helping hand and strong shoulder. Don't be too surprised when something you have predicted comes true. I have some interesting predictions for you on 1550 151 267...! December is professionally, a progressive month.

2, Debussy's enchanting, impressionistic Images, and finally the pyrotechnics of Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No.3. For his first encore John O'Conor calmed things down a bit and gave us the lovely, soothing Nocturne in E Flat by Chopin and then finished his brilliant perfor mance with Romance by Sibelius. A night to be remembered. A veritable feast of music at its very best, that left all of us deep ly indebted to John O'Con or and Music for Galway. Go raibh fada buan sibh go leir. M . M . , D.G.
