Shopping
Dear Editor, Many shoppers would like to kr.ow whether the products they buy have been tested on animals. We are all aware of the couple of shops in Galway that only sell pro ducts which have not sub jected animals to needless pain, but what of all the other products we buy on a daily basis? At last a booklet has been published which lists not on ly those companies ewhose products have not been tested on animals, but also lists those companies and brand names which are. While the booklet does not include Irish companies, it is n e v e r t h e l e s s extremely useful, given the fact that the vast majority of clean ing/cosmetic type products we buy are imported. The booklet entitled "Your Guide to Compas sionate Shopping" makes for very interesting reading, covering products from toothpaste to toiletries and from household cleansers to hair styling preparations. Despite enormous public support to put an end to the needless testing of cosmetics on animals, the Council of E u r o p e a n Ministers in Brussells recently decided that experiments for cosmetics would be allowed to continue. Why? Quite simply to satisfy the wealthy and powerful cosmetics in dustry. European, American and Japanese multi-natinal cosmetic companies have huge publicity departments and enormous financial resources. Millions of animals are subjected to experiments each year, with an upsurge in the testing of household products and environmental pollutants on animals. This, despite the many alternative methods of testing, such as computer modelling, molecular research and test tube tissues. Commericial companies lobby EC bodies and government departments regularly to prevent change. Apart from our own lobby ing, what we as ordinary shoppers can do is to be very selective about what brands
ol piuuuvi *c buy.

Remember, unless the pro duct clearly states that it does not test on animals, then it does. Please ignore the sales pitch of beauticians and counter assistants who try to convince you other wise. Quite often they speak with genuine ignorance about the products they sell or are on a form of commission. What the compassionate shopper should bear in mind is that a number of com panies who do not test their own products on animals, nevertheless carry out con tract testing for companies who may not have their own testing license. Such com panies are also listed in the booklet. Anyone who would like a copy of "Your Guide to Compassionate Shopping" should contact the G.S.P.C.A. (Galway Socie ty for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) at 091 96357. Yours, Alison Herbert Ballybrit, Galway.
