FANTASTIC FIFTEENTH FESTIVAL!

FIFTEENTH GALWAY ARTS FESTIVAL OPENS WITH A BANG!
The Abbey Theatre's Artistic Director Garry Hynes returned to Galway last night to open the 15th Galway Arts Festival. Garry, whose own impressive legacy to the artistic life of Galway is Druid Theatre Company, praised the organisers of this year's Festival and traced the history of the Festival from its small beginnings in 1978.

NORTHERN TELECOM, the Mervue based manufacturers of telecom munications equipment, are once again sponsoring the major Festival show, Theatre Sans Fils' spectacular "Lord of the Rings". "Lord of the Rings", based on J.R.R. Tolkien's famous fantasy novel, tells the story of the adventurous quest by a doughty company of Hobbits who must destroy a dangerous magical ring before it falls into the hands of the Dark Lord, Sauron. Puppets and live actors feature in a show that has dazzled audiences internationally. "Lord of the Rings" will be performed in The Big Top, Fisheries Field, from July 21st to the 25th.

Ms. Hynes said she was very honoured to be invited to open this year's Festival and spoke of the fine tradition of artistic endeavour that had maintained such a consistently high standard over the years. One problem, however, remained as pressing as ever - the lack of suitable venues for die many events and activities that were put on each year. The new Mayor of Galway, Cllr. Padraic Mc Cormick, said it was a great pleasure to open the Festival and he welcomed the many visitors to the city. Festival Artistic Director Trish Forde, expressed her thanks to all who had helped bring such an amazing eoliee-

tion of talent to Galway this year. She thanked all those in the Festival Office, especially Festival Manager Fergal McGrath. Ms. Forde also thanked the many generous Festival sponsors, large and small, whose support was so much appreciated, Music was provided by Gerard Coffey's new group One + One and one of the big Festival acts this year, "Stomp", literally raised the roof with an impressive display of mighty percussion, Catering was provided by Brannagans, Smithwkks, sponsors of the music programme, and Coca Cola, who are sponsoring the Children's Festival.
