Deputy Michael D . Higgins, who recently won a major international peace prize for his work to pro mote peace and justice in the world, will receive a Civic reception in Galway this evening. Deputy Higgins w a s presented with the First an

nual Sean McBride Peace prize from the International Peace Bureau (IPB) in Helsinki on Sunday. Accepting his award Deputy Higgins spoke of the current refugee crisis in the world. It was important that these people be treated with respect and humanity, and

that other nations realise that displaced people have their own special historical and cultural contribution to offer.

Justice and peace must always be pursued, even in an increasingly difficult climate, he told his au dience. The Lord M a y o r of Dublin, Cllr, Gay Mitchell, T . D . marked Deputy Hig gins award, by hosting a civic reception for him yesterday (Wednesday) at the Mansion House. The Irish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament also offered congratulations to the Galway Deputy. Deputy Higgins' award, which was sponsored by Irish CND and AFri, Ireland was designed and made by the d i s t i n g u i s h e d Irish goldsmith, Mr. Padraig O ' Mathuna of Cashel. It is a solid silver disc depticting various peace symbols, the main one being the interna tional Peace Bureau olive branch. " H e deserves this award for his great and tireless work ofr peace and justice in the w o r l d , " said Irish CND National Secretary and IPB member, Ms. Adi Roche. "Michael D. Hig gins is an example to us all, and an inspiration to our young people."
