Johnny Choil Mhaidhc is indeed a household name in Connemara and is well k n o w n to G a e i l g e o i r i throughout the country. He has published three books and his latest play, An Mheir Fhada, was in the Taibhdhearc on May 15 and 16. As one would expect from Johnny, this play is full of laughter, indeed it was really laughter all the way. But it is not a great play, which is a pity because it has the bones of one. These, however, are not fleshed out, nor are the hints and suggestions really explored or developed. The two bachelors, Sun ny and Tunai, are putting everything on the meir fhada longing for women, and be ing robbed in the end by two lassies. Then there is the sister, Meaig, who has been sending money all along from America and who at the end returns. She is disgusted because of the condition of the house and goes off at the end with Tunai and leaves Sonny alone. This play was produced by Cumann Dramaiochta and Johnnv Choil Mhai/Hhr-

together with An Comhlachas Naisiunta Dramaiochta. It would be interesting to know where the one began and the other ended, or what impact the one had on the other. Johnny himself is the director, ac cording to the programme, and one wonders if this is feasible. Is the playwright here the ideal one to direct the play? The Irish right through sparkles and is a pleasure in itself, but this production fails because of no real dramatic orientation. In deed, for most of the play we had an agallamh beirte which was fine as an agallamh but not as a play. D i a r m u i d M a c an Adhastair is quite a good ac tor and Sean Leainde a good follow up. With proper direction and a good script they could have done a good job. Beartla O Domhnaill was ideal as an fear an phoist. The girls, Monica Bn. Ui Griofa and Sarah Bn. Ui Chonghaile, were quite good in their contrived roles, as was Margo Ni Griofa as Meaig. an tSiur Ailbhe Paul D o y l e , whose workshop is out at Bally bane Beg Industrial Estate (Unit 3 Block B), is holding an open day for those interested in seeing the work of a master craftsman, whose in struments are sought after by groups like U2, the Hothouse Flowers, Christy M o o r e and T h e Big Geraniums. Paul Doyle, who is a musician himself, has been making musical instruments for the past 15 years. He studied with Dr. Ephraim S e g e r m a n at N o r t h e r n Renaissance Instruments in Manchester, one of the leading researchers into the construction of both early and modern instruments. In 1990 he suffered injuries from a traffic accident and was forced to spend the last year and a half recovering. Now, with his fine craft smanship drawing attention from many quarters, he is fully back to work. If you would like to see an artist at work, why not call by on Monday, anytime between 12 a.m. and 9 p.m.

GALWAY YOUTH THEATRE TO PRESENT "HEROES"
After the huge success of last Summer's inaugural pro duction, " D o n ' t Forget to W r i t e " , Galway Youth Theatre returns to N u n ' s Island Arts Centre with its major produc tion of the year, " H e r o e s " , a new play written and directed by Rebecca Bartlett and Molly Fogarty, with music by Jules Maxwell. It opens at Nun's Island on Tuesday, June 2nd, and runs for a week prior to touring to Kinvara, Ennis, Inishmore and Tuam. As with " D o n ' t Forget to W r i t e " , this new production, exploring the relationships between members of a newly popular Rock band who return to Ireland to make that crucial "second a l b u m " , has come about through a series of workshops conducted by GYT Artistic Director Rebec ca Bartlett and her co-director, Molly Fogarty. Although someone like Mother Teresa or Bob Geldof is a hero to many people, the most heroic individuals are often those who have encountered adversity in their private lives and overcome it. This is what " H e r o e s " explores. The show is generously sponsored by Bank of Ireland. Tickets for the run of the play can be booked at Galway Arts Centre, 47 Dominick St.. or by calling 091 6S886. 2 b Next Week: "That's Entertainment" talks with Rebec ca Bartlett and Molly Fogarty, along with the young ac tors and actresses of G Y T who've put " H e r o e s " together and why they think it's a play with a lot of important things to say about Ireland in 1992.
