ie announcement that Calvary Hospital is to cl However, Mr. Eamonn Hannon, Chief Executive Officer, Western Health Board, when challenged at Monday's meeting of the Board, spoke extensively on the whole question of Calvary's predicament. Mr. Hannon expressed regret that the 'Advertiser' did not approach him first before "rushing into press" and said he was aware of the difficulties which Cal vary were in. In fact he had approached them on ] four occasions and discussed the possibilities of in tegration between Calvary and the Western Health Board but his offers were never taken up. Referring to the fact that the city's leading surgeons and obstetricians employed by the Western Health Board are not allowed to attend patients at Calvary Mr. Hannon said that Cal vary is not strictly a hospi tal--it is a large nursing home of 72 beds and does not have a resident medi cal staff of its own; it is a matter for Calvary to appoint their own consul tants. "During the stewardship of the former Health Auth ority (Galway Co. Council) and since the establishment of the Western Health Board, I have consistently refused to allow wholetime members of the Consultant Medical Staff of the Board employed at the Galway Regional Hospitals to work in Calvary," he stated and continued "If a person re quires nursing home treat ment, Calvary provides it, but if a full medical or surgical service is needed, then, that is available at the Western Health Board Regional Hospitals. Even if I agree to this request, I could not allow it to happen at present as the Consultant staffing at the Galway Regional Hos-

pital is grossly inadequate." Again referring to the suggestion in the 'Adver tiser' that were Calvary to close, we would again see a steady exodus of Galway patients to Dublin Hospi tals. Mr. Hannon denied this. "The treatments avail able at the Galway Regio nal Hospitals is of such a high standard and the re putation of our consultants so well known that already they attract patients from outside our own Health Board area, and other parts of the country. Mr. Hannon also said it was untrue that Calvary receives no financial assis tance from the Health Bo ard--in fact the Board pay the authorised contribution towards the cost of eligible patients treated there--a subsidy which exceeded ten thousand pounds last year.
