"I cannot think of a better way to occupy one's spare time than to acquire the knowledge and skill that may one day save the life of a fellow being," said Mr. R. Molloy, Minister for Local Government at the presen tation of 125 Water Safety Certificates at St. Patrick's School last Saturday evening. Mr. Molloy praised the County Water Safety Com mittee and said it was one of the most active in the country. This year a total of 302 people qualified in Galway and County, more than double last year's figure. Mr. Molloy, whose department was res ponsible for setting up the swimming campaign in April 1971, has to date recorded 3,600 persons qualified for life-saving awards and over 11,000 received instruction in basic swimming. In 1970 there was 150 drownings in Ire land but in 1971 the figure was 144; "a heartening de crease" said the Minister. Mr. Molloy warmly praised the efforts and example of Mr. Jimmy Cranny "who travelled the highways and byways persuading people, as only Jimmy can do, to participate' in the Committee's activities".
