LANEWAYS TO THE RIVER
Dominick Street and 'The West; one of the oldest areas in the city and one which contains access to the river and canals, is now being targeted by Galway Corporation for a face-lift. Outside the designated areas, which offered tax incentives to deveiopers in the city centre, Dominick Street and "The West' have gone into some decline in recent years. The refurbishment of the old Bridge Mills by the Heneghan family has led the way and opened City Planner's eyes to the potential of the area. Some of the highlights of the plan include: Dredging clean all the watercourses, developing river and canal side walks. Constructing steps down to the river walks and installing guard railings. A new 50 vehicle car park off Fairhill. Refurbish Henry Street playground. All overhead cables and wires to be tidied up. The Fisheries Tower, off Wolfe Tone Bridge, developed as an information centre, and lands at the rear of Dominick Street, along the waterways will be encouraged to develop a network of arcades, laneways and courtyards.
