HAVE A BALL AT THE CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL
Children of Galway, grab your parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, or anybody who might take you the Children's Streets Festival this Saturday. This is the fifth year of the Children's Festival which is held in the general area of High Street, Cross Street and Quay Street. Fire eaters, puppeteers uni cyclists, lots of circus acts, balloons, fancy dress - it is all happening on the streets on Saturday June 9th. The fun begins in Eyre Square at 11.30 a.m.. Peo ple can register for the Fancy Dress there at noon. This will parade through the streets, and all the local business plan to take part. There is a strong community involvement, and the festival will be opened by Mrs. Kenny, from Kennys Bookshop and Art Gallery who recenUy received a Person of the Year Award. According to organiser, Judy Greene, this is the biggest festival ever, with acts coming from all over Ireland. "As well as the visitors we* have our own local magican, Paddy Meaney. We have a professional face painter this year, and our 50 stewards who will be dressed as clowns will also be painting faces. There will be a pottery workshop and the children can also take part in pave ment drawings." Judy says many local sweets and soft drinks companies have been very generous and there will be lots of goodies. The festival will finish with a disco at the crossroads, an event which has always been the highlight of the day. Stripped Pine

This is the only children's street festival in Galway. It started out as a general festival, before adopting its present for mat five years ago. "We began a festival when other areas were do ing the same, and the original idea was to pro mote the streets. Then we decided to make it a children's event, because nobody was catering for them," Judy explains. This is a non commer cial event, and Judy says it could not survive without

the support of its sponsors, particularly its main sup porter, Hillview Securities. It gets more expensive every year, and as the area is getting bigger so is the festival," says Judv.

"That's why we need sup port." Everything is on course, it looks set to be a great day, so roll up and be entertained.
