Message from . . . Brendan Corish
The Labour Party is asking the electorate to vote NO in the Referendum on Wednesday, May ioth, because it believes that it is not in the interest of our people to accept full membership of the E.E.C. The effects of full membership would be a drastic endangering of Irish jobs; a further increase of 13% on food prices that already threaten those on lower and fixed incomes with poverty and the abandonment of the power to develop Irish solutions to Irish problems. It is important on May ioth that you vote on the facts. You must not be influenced by cynical and phoney arguments. It has been said in this campaign that we simply have to go in--that we have no choice. But what then is the Referendum all about? The truth is that you can decide on May 10th to do whatever you choose. The Government has to obey your wishes and if you wish to send the nego tiators back to Brussels, you can do so by simply voting NO. What the Government will not openly admit in their arguments of inevita bility is that the economy under their management has become so slavishly dependent on the British market. Entry to the EEC would spare them from the unpleasant consequences of their criminal follv. Full entry to the EEC has benefits--for the few and in the short term. For the people in general it would spell disaster. What doss Labour say then about alternatives? The Treaty of Rome clear ly and unambiguously pro vides for different kinds of relationship with the EEC. Article 238 states: "The Community may conclude with a third coun try, a union of States or an international organisation, agreements creating an association embodying re ciprocal rights and obliga tions, joint actions and special procedures." Many countries have such an agreement. We have not asked for it. Instead the Government has over-rep resented our level of dev elopment and applied for Full Membership. Industrial products would have free access under such an Agreement. With agricultural products there is some difficulty. Austria, however, just a few weeks ago negotiated free access for certain agricultural goods. We could negotiate an association agreement. To get it you must vote NO.

There will be a F i l m Show twice daily at 11.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. at our premises during the above week.

Phone: Galway 2091/6 (McD Grams: McDonaghs Galway) Padbury I would like to address a special word to you Gal way people. You do not need me to tell you of the effects of centralization on your lives. The recent his tory of this country shows an uncontrolled concentra tion of jobs and people in the already overcrowded city of Dublin. You in your province have a mere ten per cent of the establish ments of the country, and about five per cent of the industrial jobs. The result is that your young people must go where capital finds its highest profit. For you then, full membership of the EEC would mean more of the same--more of the same rot--for the exper ience of the Six to date is that of a huge concentra tion of people in the centre of the Community.
