G A L W A Y L O O K T O A V A N G E LAST LOSS AGAINST BOHS.
Galway United's Opel League season com
This clash will provide United with the good test to discover whether their recent showings a r e in dicative of an upturn in their fortunes. United have every in centive to win. In their last Bank Holiday defeat by the Dubliners, United lost a 2 - 0 half time lead. Had United retained that ad vantage, they would have reached third place in the league table. Manager Paul McGee can at least welcome back his suspended defenders Pete Carpenter and Jim my Nolan. It is a moot point if there will be many alterations to the line-up which faced U.C.D. The Dubliners now have severed their connections with Billy Young, who was synonomous with the Gyp sies' better days in the eighties. Padraic O'Con n o r ' s propensity for fielding efficient and organised sides, which give little away at the back, seems to have again the relegation ratings. Their victory over U.C.D. suggested United should consolidate their midtable placing. been his primary concern since taking the managerial reins at Dalymount. It is vital United travel to Dublin with the same positive attitude which marked their game in Drogheda. McGee and Tommy Keane's display will be of particular impor tance. No defence in the League needs a clean sheet as United. Although Bohemians are not the force of old, few Galway United followers are not unaware of the task awaiting the Westerners on Sunday.

Relegation Ratings
Bohemians were unfor tunate to suffer a reverse against their tenants Shamrock Rovers recent ly, following with a 1 - 1 draw against Dundalk last Sunday. United should use Sun day's tie to show all that they are well away from

The Eighties were a mixture of success , failure and "might have beens" for Galway's G.A.A. Sportsmen. Sam McGuire glances back and looks ahead to what might be in store in 1990.

Galway's Hurling Goal - Retaining Div. O n e
Galway hurlers will find it much more difficult to get back on top than many people think.
They have already made a bad start to the N.H.,L., losing against Cork, Tipperary and Dublin. With Just one win against Limerick to their credit, the hurlers next challenge is an away game to Kilken ny in Nowlan Park on February 18, which will not be an easy one. A week later Galway face Antrim at home. This
is a match the Westerners should win with Antrim go ing through post All Ireland blues. However, the signs in dicate Galway will not re tain the National Hurling League title. Retaining division one status will be the goal. The final game is away to Wexford and that will not be an easy one either. A win in all three would mean Galway was well and truely back to form.

Sarsfields

Grave Digging
Last year Galway helped dig its own grave by moans and threats to withdraw over the Ready affair. Cyril Farrell must be admired as the greatest trainer, but he got overinvolved in the pontics of the Ready affair. The G.A A - from the top down - seemed to have it in for Galway , particularly since the Lynskey affair in 1988. Let's hope all noses are kept clean in the nineties, and nothing will divert Galway from another All Ireland attempt. The signs are Brendan Lynskey is holding on, but will he regain his place? There is a fight on for places, and the County may never again see Lyn skey, Mahon, Linnane or

On February U Galway champions Sarsfields take on Ballyhale Shamrock the Rilkenny County Champions - in the All Ireland Senior Club semi final at Ballinasloe. Don't be surprised if Sarsfields go on to win the All Ireland.

The Minors
The Minors were unlucky to lose to Clare in the All Ireland Hurling semi-final last year. A doubtful decision near the game's end certainly harmed Galway's chances. This was Galway's best minor performance in years, and it was strange then to see John Fahy selected or elected over last year's team manager John Coady. A lack of competition does not help Galway here In all grades, Galway will be in there competing.
