A Chara, I a t t e n d e d t h e public m e e t i n g o r g a n i s e d b y the d e v l e o p e r s of Clifden A i r p o r t in O s t a n Charna, W e d n e s d a y night last', the 17th J a n u a r y . During the c o u r s e of the meeting I a s k e d s o m e pertinent questions w h i c h still remain unanswered. My q u e s t i o n s w e r e as follows: 1. H o w m a n y flights p e r d a y a n d per w e e k will be h a n d l e d b y this project? i.. m a m u u t i v a w N i u t using this proposed airport? 3. W h a t size of 'plane? 4. H o w m a n y passen g e r s p e r d a y will this a i r p o r t cater for? 5. W i l l t h e airport handle international flights? 6. If t h e a i r p o r t d e v e l o p e r s foresee 8,000 p a s s e n g e r s using the a i r p o r t b y 1992 h o w can such a n airport be viable? I w o u l d also like to include t h e following questions: 1. H o w m a n y real jobs will b e c r e a t e d if it is a o n e flight a d a y airport? 2. C a n a o n e flight a d a y a i r p o r t s e r v e the n e e d s of o u r emigrants? 3. Is it t r u e that this p r o p o s e d a i r p o r t is a full scale regional o n e i.e. the s a m e size a s Galway Airport? 4. W h i l e all t h e s e w e r e n o t a l w a y s n e w o n e s , t h e n u m b e r ise x p e c t e d t o d o u b l e at a later stage. N o t surprisingly there is a n air o f confidence about the place. While u n e m p l o y m e n t f i g u r e s a r e still u n a c c e p t a b l y h i g h t h e r e is a f e e l i n g that t h e e n e r g y a n d professionalism n o w being applied b y public b o d i e s will c o n t i n u e t o r e a p r e w a r d s . B u t w h a t e m e r g e d during a press c o n f e r e n c e o n T u e s d a y w a s that the Gaeltacht -- far f r o m being s o m e sort o f p o o r relation struggling f o rrecognition in a m o r e p r o s p e r o u s family -- h a s d e v e l o p e d into a n individual a n d auton o m o u s r e g i o n . It h a s g i v e n a g r e a t d e a l o f t h o u g h t t o t h e t y p e o f a r e a it w a n t s t o b e c o m e a n d it n o w e m e r g e s a s a m o d e l t h a t o t h e r cities, c o u n t i e s a n d c o m m u n i t i e s c o u l d well follow. G O N E I S T H E R O M A N T I C attitude t o t h e Irish language. A n d t h e clap-trap that u s e d t ob e s p o k e n w h e n people u r g e d that m o n e y s h o u l d b e p o u r e d into t h e Gaeltacht just t o k e e p t h e l a n g u a g e a l i v e . W h a t h a s d e v e l o p e d is a c o m m u n i t y w i t h a realistic b u s i n e s s s e n s e a n d a feeling o fits i m p o r t a n c e a n d c h a r a c t e r , a n d o f i t s o w n p e r s o n a l w o r t h . It is a p i t y t h a t t h e r e s t o f u s w h o a r e b e c o m i n g d a n g e r o u s l y o b s e s s e d with pollution that w e are in danger o f c o n d e m n i n g outright the spawning salmon a n d shell fish f a r m s . O f c o u r s e chemicals a r e n e e d e d t o protect vast s t o c k s f r o m d i s e a s e . But no more than i s u s e d o n f a r m a n i m a l s and land. F i s h f a n n i n g i s still a n e w c o n c e p t . I f b u t t e r - m a k i n g w a s e q u a l l y a s n e w w o u l d t h e r e b e t h e s a m e l o b b y p r o t e s t i n g a t all t h e c h e m i c a l s t h a t a r e first a b s o r b e d b e f o r e t h e s t u f f i s p u t i n t o a p l a s t i c tub? Fish farmers a n d t h e h u n d r e d s e m p l o y e d i n this n e w industry h a v e y e t t o get their public relations act in o r d e r . I n t h e m e a n t i m e it i s a n i n d u s t r y t h a t is t o t a l l y a t h o m e a l o n g t h e C o n n e m a r a c o a s t l i n e . It i s b e i n g d e v l e o p e d w i t h t h e a i d o f U . C .
