attention from neigh bours. But at the back? Ah, that's another thing altogether, something infinitely more myster ious and utterly reward ing! Though they are never totally private, they contain a quality that lulls you into feeling secluded, alone and unobserved. Here you can potter in your workclothes, without make-up or hairdo, and never worry as to who may see you in your haven of seclusion. Here, you can create your "secret garden", one full of treasures and loved plants that are usually associated with gardens of antiquity, but modified into an urban retreat where a little sylvan h o o d w i n k i n g really works! You create illusions with c l i m b e r s like clematis or roses on wooden supports so that all you own is not viewed in the overall glance. Divide up long, narrow plots using specimen shrubs to the left and right at staggered intervals, and keep paths narrow and winding so that pollen and coloured petals will have to be brushed from your clothing once you reach that seat area near the end limits of your boundary fence. Underplant all trees and shrubs with bulbs not solely the springflowering kinds, mind you, but those also that bloom in midsummer and early autumn. So that if half your secret garden is perpet ually in shade - there are beauties like primulas, ferns, astilbes, lily-of-thev alley, host as and many more which will excel in such situations. In sunny areas use your annuals, lillies, herbaceous bloomers and miniature or patio roses. If what passes for a lawn looks too small or if the constant cutting takes too much of your time, why not get rid of it altogether and go for a gravelled or paved area instead? On this, stand your pots and containers. No back-gardener can fail to be aware of the important part that these play in small-space gardening. Round every corner nowadays, one can see pots with scarlet geraniums, cascading lobelia and ample clumps of softly-hued petunias, all of which could grace your plot given remind ers on when to begin, and instructions on their modest requirements. Overhead, or from wall brackets, one can have overflowing bask ets to last from May to October, even in years when our sunshine quota is way below that of 1989. Some failures, must be expected with container plantings, especially

when the grower is not constantly present, but then again the help of a neighbour or friend can reduce these to a minimum. I'm full of ideas for the coming year, all you have to do is attempt what I suggest even on a tiny scale. Begin this soon by clearing the area nearest the back door. Bite off a little at a time never huge chunks which will tire you and make you give up long before that "secret garden" begins to take shape. N o w a d a y s , plants, trees and shrubs don't come cheap, but when matched against the price of Christmas drink, clothes, dining out or petrol, they are relatively inexpensive and far more

permanent. Treat your self once a month to something which will give you years of pleasure and enjoyment. Don't hang on to miserable, neglected and sad items, in the hope that they will eventually satisfy. They won't - you know it and so do they.
