Full M a r k s for N e w School
Dear Sir, It was with a sense of great satisfaction that I read in your newspaper of the moves to start a MultiDenominational National School in Galway. For some people this relative ly new idea will be seen on ly as a threat to establish ed religious practices. This it most certainly is not, however. Instead, MultiDenominational education is an attempt to foster tolerance and respect in the minds of young children for all genuinely held religious beliefs, whatever they may be. But it is also much more than that. Educating boys and girls together will help ensure that the respect and understanding of one sex for the other will be carried through life. In a country where we can demonstrate only too clearly the great cost in term sof human life which an intolerance of the beliefs of others has had, we should welcome any development which aims to change this as the ad vance it surely is. Yours sincerely, G. Flynn. 29 Rockfield Park, Galway.

The German Exodus
Dear Sir, In response to last week's letter "The DDR Failed", I want only to mention that despite of economic problems the standard of living in East Germany is in general cer tainly higher than in Ireland (and there is no unemployment). 200,000 Germans left their coun try. That means the emigration rate is still lower than in Ireland. Of course I welcome certain political changes (not on ly) in the DDR. Yours, Hans Hoegelsberger. Ideas for C i t y
Dear Sir, Now that the Galway corporation have so much money (see last week's Advertiser), the people in Shantalla may get their bathrooms, having had to wait over 40 years for them. The New Cemetery may get a workman's hut and so eliminate desecrating the Catholic Church/Chapel there by storing peat moss inside it. The Protestant Chapel in the New Cemetery has been beautifully restored. The Corporation could have folders made with pictures of old Galway characters like "Shoots" and "Mate", giving their histories and these could be sold in many outlets and the profit given to St. Vin cent de Paul or the Social Services. The river walk could be extended and the Memorial Arch erected at O'Brien's Bridge in memory of all those who died for freedom. If and when the mebers of Galway Corporation have with good cons ciences, money to spend on sculptures etc., they might remeber Fr. Michael McGrath S.J., who did so much for Our Lady's Boys Club, his cousin Fr. Cashman S. J., and Jimmy Cranny who did so much in teaching the youth of Galway to swim. Also, what about those to be housed? If there is money to be spent, housing should also be a priority. First things first, please, members of Galway Corporation. Sincerely, "Galwegian" John Gibbs.
