"Adventures in Music - SuiH i l l er Classes for Children
Music has long been recognised as a method of relaxation, stimulation and general enjoyment. Experts agree that like any other skill, the more you know about music, the more enjoyable and fulfilling it becomes.
This summer, a new course, Adventures in Music, aimed at introduc ing children to music and increasing their awareness of it, is being held in Galway. Adventures in Music which is a week long course will be held in the Woodlands Centre, Renmore and is for children from 4-12. The first course is from 10th - 14th of July, the second from the 17th 21st of July. Kathleen Burke is one of the organisers of Adven tures in Music, and like the other two women and one man involved she has vast experience in teaching music "There are different aspects to the course, and the whole aim is that children will get basic music education in an at mosphere of fun. The story and development of music will be dealt with, children will learn about various composers and their works, we will be placing a great emphasis on music from all round the world, and will be teaching them about all the different types of musical in struments, " she enthuses.

Because music is a sub ject which many children are not exposed to in schools, the organisers feel that Adventures in Music will offer them a special opportunity to explore the huge world of music. "If they are given an ap preciation of all types of music, they will become better listeners and as a result music will give them even more fulfill ment" says Dearbhaill Standun, who is also in volved in Adventures in Music. The organisers felt that an atmosphere of enjoy ment on the course will give the young par ticipants even greater en-

Kathleen Burke and Irene Geraghty have qualifications in piano and both teach pupils of all ages. Kathleen also plays harp while Irene is a well known singer. These four enterprising people were involved in a Music Education Diploma Course in UCG and decid ed to come together to organise the Summer School. If it is successful and there is a demand for this type of music education the group will consider running the Adventures in Musiccourse on a more regular basis. World Architecture Day - Building a Better Future
Where ever there are humans there's a pretty good chance that you'll find buildings - structures of all shapes, sizes, col ours, some pleasing, some non-descript and some just plain awful. Whatever their attributes most buildings are impossible to ignore. Because buildings and their design are so impor tant to everybody, Satur day, July 1st has been designated as World Ar chitecture Day. Here in Galway the oc casion is being celebrated in style by local architects who are holding an exhibi tion in St. Nicholas' Col legiate Church. Work from various architectural practices in town will be exhibited. Nothing like en thusiasm, and although World Architecture Day isn't until July 1st, the Galway exhibition begins the day before, June 30th and will run until the following evening. Some of the exhibits are buildings commissioned by clients from different areas of Ireland, some are of local Galway buildings. Sarah Kelly who is organising the show, qualified in 1984 with a degree in Architecture from UCD and since then has worked in England and other countries. leads to a general im provement." she claims Cannon Leslie Forrest of St Nicholas' has shown great interest in the exhibi tion and Sarah is thrilled that it is being held in St. Nicholas'. "This is one of the most historical architectural monuments in Galway and it's very suitable that our exhibition, which aims to make the public more aware of architecture in everybody's lives is being held in such a beautiful building," she says warmly. It is expected that there will be at least 10 practices exhibiting, and each will display a selection of their work. Admission to what promises to be a very ex citing exhibition is free, and everybody is welcome.

However she is quick to point out that architects, planners, clients or the public generally should never take that reputaion for granted. "We must continually work to improve what has been established," she maintains. believes. "If people de mand more attractive buildings, the clients who are paying for the buildings have to take that into consideration and this

Promoting Better Design
She is confident that this exhibition will attract public attention, and feels that it is important for peole to take an interest in uildings that are being planned around them. "The aim of this exhibi tion is to promote good design," she states, "the design of buildings has a big impact on people's lives in a lot of ways. We look at them, we go in and out of them, we use them for different purposes. Therefore it's good when people take an interest" Sarah believes that the overall townscape and the effect of buildings on a town also have important implications for tourism and the economy. 'Tor instance if you look at some of the cities and towns on the continent where there are beautiful buildings, which are well laid out. you will find loads

Caring for the Environment
Caring for the environ ment is an important issue at present, and here too Sarah believes that good design has a major role to play. "Buildings are part of the environment just like the air and the sea, and they make a huge impact because they are so visible and so tangible, she feels. "If you have sant buildings which i't fit into their surrounds then the environment is going to suffer." Public participation is becoming increasingly im portant in planning and building generally, Sarah
