Alcoholics Anony mous in Ireland will be holding their 32nd AllIreland Convention in Leisureland, Salthill, from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th, May. From humble begin nings in America just over 50 years ago this organisation has helped millions of alcoholics in 114 countries, including Ireland, to reach and maintain sobriety. Today, worldwide membership is over one million, with 8,000 members in Ireland. Alcoholics Anonymous was the brainchild of a New York Stockbrtoker, Bill W., and an Akron Surgeon, Dr. Bob S., both alcoholics. The two met in 1935 in Akron, Ohio, and soon set to work with other alcoho lics at Akron's City Hospital, where one patient was helped to sobriety; these 3 formed the 1st. A.A. Group. Within 4 years 100 alcoholics had been s o b e r e d . By 1950 membership had reached 100,000, and today well over a million are being helped to recover from one of the world's most dehabilitating illnesses. The first International Convention was held at Cleveland in 1950, and has since met in locations as far apart as Finland and Guatamala. Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in Ireland in 1946. Many thousands of sober alcoholics, along with their families and friends, will be looking forward to next May's All-Ireland Convention, where they will not only discurs their recovery programme but also take part in dances and sing songs and have a grand old hooley altogether ! Both the opening meeting (8.30 p.m., on Friday) and the closing meeting (3.00 p.m., on Sunday) are open to all members of the public.

The Labour Party Claddagh/Salthill Branch condemned the Health cuts at their recent conference. In particular the Western Health Board and its Chairman, Sean Doherty, T.D., were c r i t i c i s e d for allowing hospitals to close and for refusing to allow Galway Borough Coun cillors their due say on the Board. While agreeing that doctors and consultants should be well paid, the Parry criticised them for "exploiting publiclyowned capital assets, the beds in our hospitals, for the benefit of fee-paying
