ROD LICENCE" LITANY OF MISJUDGEMENTS, SAYS MOLLOY
Despite intensive weekend efforts to resolve the rod licence dispute, anglers have vowed to con tinue their campaign and expressed disappointment over the Minister, Mr. Da ly's, apparent failure to back up Mr Mark Killila's efforts to find a solution. This week Mr. Bobby Molloy emphasized that ef forts by successive Fianna Fail Governments to in troduce a rod licence were serious misjudgements. "Charles Haughey made a mistake when he tried to introduce a rod licence in the '60's, the then Fianna Fail Parliamentary Party rejected the move; Brian Lenihan made another mistake when he tried to introduce a rod licence in the '70's; the then Parliamentary Party re jected that move too. Charles Haughey made a very serious mistake in December 1987 when he applied a guillotine motion to introduce the present rod licence legislation without allowing discus sion of the bill." Mr. Haughey. said Mr. Molloy, is guilty- of "culpable intransigence" in his continued reluctance to face the fact that the legislation had failed. His inability to admit he had made an error now looked like causing enormous damage to tourism pro spects this season, especially in the West and North West. Mr. Molloy felt that the present Government had underestimated the depth

of popular resentment directed at the rod licence legislation. The issue of the people's right to fish the free lakes and rivers was taken very seriously by the angler's, even to the extent of denying themselves the pleasure of fishing in them until the dispute is settled. "The organized angling clubs have expressed their willingness time and time again to contribute towards the development of the fishing industry through an annual com pulsory development con tribution,',' stressed Mr. Molloy. "I call on all opposition leaders and their deputies to unite after the Easter recess to vote out the rod licence in time for visitng anglers to make ar rangements for the Mayf ly holiday season, and to bring to an end the sad sight of deserted lakes, hotels, shops and guesthouses."
