Galway's filthy footpaths to get major scrubbing from new Eco-Washers
BY KERNAN ANDREWS Galway's filthy footpaths are set to get a good clean up when the Galway City Council's new specialised scrubbing vans take to the streets. The new, specially equipped Eco-Washer van wash, scrub, and suction the dirt on footpaths and can remove encrusted substances such as grease and grime. It does not give off any exhaust fumes and is environmentally friendly. The Eco-Washer was used by the city council on a trial basis last year and proved to be successful. They will be used throughout the city but mainly in the city centre and Eyre Square areas. PD Cllr Terry O'Flaherty has been campaigning for the permanent introduction of the Eco-Washer and has welcomed the news that they are to be used. She says she is "very pleased that my recommendations were taken on board." Cllr O'Flaherty said the city's footpaths "are in a filthy condition and have been getting worse by the day". She added: "The positive image and attractiveness of Galway city is being spoiled. Dirt, litter, spilled drinks, chewing gum, every-day grime and food particles have all accumulated to create a filthy layer of grime on our footpaths over the years which could not be removed due to the lack of proper equipment." She said that despite the fact the streets are washed every morning with specialised cleaning trucks the footpaths have "never been properly washed" as the city council did not have any special cleaning equipment for removing the dirt from footpaths. Cllr O'Flaherty said the effectiveness of equipment such as The Eco-Washer "has already been proven, particularly in cities throughout Europe".
