The endeavour, the brainchild of project manager Tom O'Dwyer, has been organised as part of Skal Ireland's participation in World Skal Day. Skal international is a professional organisation of tourism leaders around the world which works to promote global tourism and friendship. Its members meet at local, national, regional, and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest. The organisation has 25,000 members in some 525 clubs in 80 countries. 1) We urgently need to purchase and deliver essential medicines for children's cancer treatment, as they are not available in Belarus at all. It is a most urgent request. 2) 10 Chernobyl Children will be taken to the locality by us - among them cancer sufferers and special needs children. Some will get treatment while here. 3) Local voluntary workers are travelling to Belarus to renovate facilities used by the Chernobyl Children, and deliver medicines.

Skal hopes to have a team from every county in Ireland climbing the Reek together to raise funds for suicide bereavement support group Console, Alan Kerins' African Projects, and Skal Ireland charities. The climb is organised by Mr O'Dwyer and Skal and is open to everyone. "This is a novel and very worthwhile cause and I and my colleagues in Skal Galway are lending our full support to Tom who is an excellent ambassador for Skal," said Mary Bennett, Skal International member and the organisation's first woman president. The climb will take place on May 16, and will conclude with climbers and friends gathering in Westport for music and refreshments.
