Land Rover Freelander achieves maximum crash test
Euro NCAP just released test results for two new small off-roaders, the Land Rover Freelander 2 and the Suzuki Grand Vitara and the results prove that size is no obstacle to protecting occupants. Euro NCAP is pleased to announce that the Land Rover Freelander 2 achieved the maximum award of five stars for adult occupant protection. The Freelander 2 is the first small off-roader to achieve such a result. It also achieved four stars for child protection. Euro NCAP tested its first small off-roader in 2002 (a Honda CR-V) and since then has tested nine cars in this category. Until today, the maximum score achieved in adult occupant protection by manufacturers in this category was four stars. Euro NCAP first tested the Land Rover Freelander in 2003, when it achieved a result of three stars in the adult rating. Euro NCAP secretary general, Adrian Hobbs said: "I am delighted that Land Rover has made such an improvement to the level of protection offered to its occupants. It is perhaps surprising that, until now, no small offroader has managed to achieve a five star rating. I am disappointed though that the company has not invested the same effort into improving the level of protection it offers to pedestrians. In this recent test, the Freelander 2 only achieved one star in pedestrian protection, just as it did in 2003. It concerns me that manufacturers are still not considering the dangers posed by their vehicles in relation to the outside environment.

Three-door diesel model to join Suzuki's Grand Vitara line-up
Customers opting for a diesel powered Suzuki Grand Vitara have until now been restricted in their choice to the larger five-door bodystyle, but a new three-door model may join the range. Unlike its petrolengined three-door sibling, which is essentially a `soft roader', the new 1.9 DDiS Grand Vitara adopts the drivetrain of the manual transmission five-door models and supplements permanent four-wheel drive with a centre differential lock and a low range to ensure serious and outstanding off road capability. It can therefore tackle tough, muddy, offroad conditions with ease, while the system's four different modes are easily selected via a dashmounted rotary switch. Power output from the Renault-supplied intercooled and turbocharged engine is 129 PS, and a hefty 221lb ft (300Nm) of torque peaking at 2,000rpm delivers reassuring ability in both on and off-road driving situations. Such output doesn't penalise fuel economy either, and the 1.9 DDiS 3 door Grand Vitara achieves 38.2mpg on the combined cycle, while carbon dioxide emissions are 195g/km. In line with other Grand Vitara models, equipment levels are generous. In addition, thanks to a unique lightweight monocoque body combined with a stiff, built-in ladder frame, rigidity matches the most traditional of off roaders. In contrast to the five-door model's understated elegance, the three-door with its `crouched' muscular form projects a more sporty persona. A relatively long wheelbase has permitted a roomy cabin with front and rear legroom comparable to that of models from a higher segment. More about this one later.
