Private kidney dialysis clinic to open in city
BY MARY O'CONNOR A new private kidney dialysis unit is to open in the city before the end of the year. The 1.5 million facility, which will be located at the Parkmore Industrial Estate, will complement the exisiting service being offered to kidney patients by the HSE West (formerly the Western Health Board) at Merlin Park Hospital. The new clinic is being set up by PEI, a leading medical and surgical sales and marketing company specialising in a number of medical fields, including orthopaedics, operation room, cardiac and dialysis services. A spokesperson for the PEI says the clinic will allow patients avail of dialysis at times which may be more convenient for them. Currently, some people have to access this at unsocial hours due to the demand for the service at the only local centre in Merlin Park Hospital. Patients may require dialysis three times a week with sessions lasting up to four hours at a time. "It will offer a choice to the HSE in terms of availability of patient services. It is hoped the clinic will offer dialysis patients an improved quality of life as treatments will be offered during sociably acceptable hours and negate the need for patients to travel long distances." Robert Keily, the managing director of PEI, says research conducted by his company found there is a "real need" for a second dialysis unit in Galway. "By providing a second renal dialysis unit in the area it will improve patients' quality of life considerably."

Major spring clean on Westside park
BY KERNAN ANDREWS A major `Spring Clean' of the public park which borders Carn Ard, Hybrasil, Inishannagh Park, and Gaelcarraig Park housing estates will be held on Saturday June 11. Labour's Cllr Billy Cameron is calling on the residents of these estates to join him for the spring clean. The area which has been designated for the clean up, stretches from the Siobhan McKenna Road to Circular Road, bordering on Inishannagh Park, Gael Carraig Park, and Carn Ard. The clean up will start at 2pm on Saturday June 11 at the viewing area. Gloves and bags will be provided by the city council. The park recently received an allocation of 70,000 under a special provision in the Galway City Council's 2005 budget. "This beautiful swathe of green area is continually being improved," Cllr Cameron said. "It is an undiscovered jewel which not alone will benefit residents of the area but citizens and tourists alike with a viewing platform and benches for picnicking or simply relaxing and taking in the vast expanse of the city."
