Parish awards to recognise volunteers
BY MARY O'CONNOR A unique community initiative being spearheaded by an Oranmore county councillor will honour people in the parish who do voluntary work. The Parish Community Recognition awards for Oranmore-Maree is the brainchild of Fine Gael councillor Fidelma Healy Eames. " It started with a generous offer from an individual living within the parish," she explains. "Following my election last year, a benefactor offered a sum of money towards a cause that I deemed worthy of support and located within the parish. Having given the matter some thought I found it impossible to identify any one single cause worthy of support above all others." However, she was acutely aware of the growing pressures on her area due to its rising population. "The two main pressure points in Oranmore are on facilities and especially on people, in the form of volunteers. And so it is to the latter area that I have decided to dedicate this sponsorship in the form of a Recognition Awards programme. The sponsor in question has agreed to this. "We are in the process of putting a committee together to oversee this project and will shortly put out a call for suggestions for awards while also looking at models for other existing programmes. Following that we will invite the public to nominate individuals or groups that they feel are worthy of recognition. It should culminate in a locally-based awards evening in early 2006." She feels it important to recognise the tremendous role played by volunteers. "They are the greatest human resource in our communities. We need to recognise people who give time and dedication freely to voluntary groups which in turn makes our community a better place to live in. I hope this Parish Awards programme will also encourage new people to offer support and take part in the community of Oranmore-Maree."
