DAIL ELECTION '81
It is a growing city with a young population and its great educational needs have been catered for very well in the past. U.C.G. provides an academic education, not in isolation but indeed in co operation with industry and I would wish to see this co operation fully developed so that any industrialist coming to Galway can be assured that the University will adapt to his requirements. 1970, of s e v e r a l o t h e r important committees and Boards since then including A g r i c u l t u r e , the H e a l t h Board and Tuam's Chamber of Commerce. Up to this election I have been involved in the most comprehensive telecommunications progra mme and will, in only a short period, introduce the most modern telephone service to the West and the county as a whole that will rank with the best available anywhere in the world. The bad telephone service which has been for so long a hinderance for social and industrial development here in the West of Ireland will soon be a myth and I am proud to have played my part. Let nobody tell me I do not know about the cost of living or the difficulties in the employment areas here and elsewhere. I am married with five children and while I admit prices of food have risen in recent years; but not nearly as badly as under the previous Government. Fianna Fail recently introduced food subsidies on the basics like bread, butter, milk and flour. The family has always been held in high esteem by Fianna Fail: children's allowances were increased by 30% in each of the last two budgets. Social Welfare benefits have been increased by 25% in this year alone; and we are committed t o further i n c r e a s e s t o maintain living standards. Fianna Fail gets things done and should you do me the honour of giving me your vote you will be assured of a first class deputy working on your behalf for your everyday needs and your future.

What the Parties' Local Candidates are saying . . .
s i t y t o w n like O x f o r d , which has the same e l e m e n t s , i s t h a t it is a l s o the capital of the largest single Irish speaking area in the world. Politicians and aspir ing politicians consis tently and very properly i d e n t i f y w i t h i s s u e s like housing, prices, and jobs, but no one has planned and exploited the real potential of the city and its e n v i r o n s . N o o n e has attempted to c o m b i n e these attributes to the best advantage of Galway West. It i s m y s u g g e s t i o n t h a t the West of Ireland should be m a d e a centre for the following: 1. A n e w m i n i s t r y o f western development, uniting the existing ministries of the Gaeltacht and Fisheries. 2. A n I . D . A . unit powered by I.D.A. staff to work specifically under aegis of the foregoing ministry. 3. A m a r r i a g e o f t h e Gaeltacht and Univer sity of such a kind that instead of the Gaeltacht being a laboratory for the University, the University becomes a truly Gaelic University where the Gaeltacht people c a n feel at h o m e . 4. A g r e a t e r a p p r e c i a tion by the City o f the i m p o r t a n c e of the rural community and most especially of the market facilities existing in the town, which should be greatly expanded. 5. A g r e a t e r e m p h a s i s in the Tourist Industry on the unique qualities of Galway West, which would require greater participation by the University during the holiday period in the Tourist Industry. 6. T h e l o c a t i o n o f a n especially gaelic orienta ted regional cultural centre in Galway which would operate with the expert assistance of the University. 7. The location in Galway of the following: facilities, including . The foundation in University College Galway of a new faculty for Third Level Educa tion for the Gardai. This would presuppose a Government policy to allow and encourage the Gardai to become a more sophisticated and better educated force with different structures and to afford t h e m o p p o r t u n i t y o f a t t a i n i n g full professional status within their career. The new Ministry of Gaeltacht Fisheries and Western Develop ment for the entire county, the entire Gaeltacht and the entire West Coast fishing industry. H o w e v e r in r e l a t i o n t o the Regional Culture C e n t r e , I m a y say that Garret Fitzgerald has allowed m e to personally announce that such a centre will be located in G a l w a y C i t y a n d t h i s is a project which has always been dear to my heart.

S e c o n d a r y T e a c h e r and Company Director. Educa ted:- St. Mary's College and U . C . G . Member of Galway County Council, G a l w a y / M a y o Regional Development Organisation. Former member Galway County Vocational Education Committe, Advisory Commi ttee, Western Health Board. M y priority in politics is to have credibility, honesty and integrity. I have been a member of Galway County Council for nine years during which time I have experienc ed much underprivilege and poverty which unfortunately society takes for granted. As a young person, my ambition is to be the voice of the underprivilaged. Because initiative and hard work should be rewarded, I believe in assisting people who want to help themselves. I believe that each persons own enterprise should be encouraged, irrespective of their walk of life. I want to work as a T.D. to lay the structures to encourage and reward hard work which we don't have enough of in this country. I have resigned my post as a full time teacher to devote all my time and energies to serve the people of West Galway. I want to be a legislator which most T.D.'s in Dail Eireann are not. I believe the Dail has become irrelevant. Our laws need to be updated, we need to adapt to a fast changing world. My special interest is in the provision of housing especially for young people. I believe we can have a system whereby most young married couples can provide their own homes. I am particularly interested in working towards this end.

T h e R . T . C . w a s an important development for our city and I feel that this is where the greatest educatio nal development can take place. I have worked and will continue to work, if elected, towards the development of the R.T.C.'s full potential. As t h e o n l y woman candidate in West Galway I consider that I have a very special responsibility to all women voters. Over the last 4 years I was responsible for the greatest package of improvement in our Consumer Legislation since 1893. -- Cons. Information Act, Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act, Trading Stamps, Occasional Trading, Roadside Trading etc. There have been changes in legislation that as a member of the Government I have played a part in attaining -- income splitting, civil legal aid scheme to provide protection in family law, paid maternity leave, rape bill, family law (criminal conversation) bill, women appointed to the High Court, semi state directorships etc. Without prejudice to the right of every woman to seek employment, the rights of mothers and women in the home must be protected and valued for their contribution to society. I am working to remove any remaining discrimination against women in employment. I do not pay lip service -- as the first woman appointed to the Cabinet since the foundation of the State I look on my appointment as a challenge not just for me as a person but for women in general to prove we can do it. If we fail to avail ourselves to the full of the talents and capabilities of women, our society as a whole will be less satisfying and our attainments as a people will be diminished. We have a great city and a great country. Let's work together to develop all of it fully.

all is a pre-requisite. In this most rapid expanding areas area I would encourage of the country, Galway has through financial incentives, developed industrially to a p e o p l e with i d e a s , and great extent in the last fifteen especially young people with years but the increasing potential to set up small population and the developm industries geared to the ent of its hinterland and the export market, thus giving great demand that Galway employment in a congenial has projected as an ideal atmosphere possible on a place to live necessitates still further new and expanded worker participation basis. i n d u s t r i e s e s p e c i a l l y the In the development of the technological type, also I Industrial and Commercial would like to see more of its life of the city and in the native industry developed e s t a b l i s h m e n t o f n e w coupled with a good food industries, I would strive to processing industry which ensure that these are, in every would cater for the local instance in harmony with our population as well as the pleasant environment. They tourist industry. would have to conform to stringent regulations with I would also like to see regard to practical and student hostels built for detailed long-term planning students of U.C.G., Regional without loop-holes. Tech., Nurses and others who More housing has always wish to avail of them. been a major priority of mine, and indeed with our rapidly growing population it may always be so. Rome wasn't built in a day, but it is absolutely imperative that such homes be constantly under construction to cater for this growth. Galway Corporation must be prevailed upon to release to you, the p e o p l e , more serviced land at a reasonable cost in order to facilitate especially young married couples who wish to build their own homes, and avail of the r e c e n t l y announced generous Government grants to first home owners, and especially generous grants to occupiers of local authority houses and accommodation. Furthermore it is essential that p l a y - c e n t r e s and recreational areas be provided for in all new housing estates to ensure the vigorous physical and mental growth of our youth, I am also deeply conscious of the need for youth clubs where our teenagers can meet and disport themselves under caring supervision and in this regard I would appeal now to interested adults who feel they could contribute on a voluntary basis, to make a start in their own area. These are violent times; second only to the family unit, a caring community is essential. In conclusion I put it to you that a Country is only as good as its people. People deserve the Government they get. Galway deserves Fianna Fail. Galway badly needs a proper traffic system both internally and to and from the regions, this would entail more bridges and many more car parks. A modern city like Galway obviously needs a medium sized Airport as well as the expansion and proper use of its port facilities. A precondition for survival in Connemara in ' 8 0 / ' 9 0 is a modern well planned infrastructural system of roads, phones, water, sewage, proper fire fighting system as well as proper refuge collection. Employment must be based on local and national demands and implemented in a way that would not harm the socio/linguistic character of this special part of Ireland, a g a i n h o u s i n g must be developed in a planned and measured fashion in order to cater for the young local population as well as our returned exiles from U.S.A. and Britain. Fishing must be developed, based in Rossaveal Harbour which is now one of our five major fishing ports. Boat building marketing, freezing, grading and canning must be done locally, more attention must be paid to the forestry industry in Connemara.

As a dedicated Galwegian it has been a singular honour for me to have for the past sixteen years represented the people of this constituency in Dail Eireann. Since early youth, as a member of many committees covering the w h o l e s p e c t r u m of the sporting, social, cultural and economic life of Galway my main objective has been to preserve and foster that special indefinable quality which makes Galway an ideal place in which to live, work, create a home and rear a family. My past achievements I consign to the archives; my concern now is with the future -- the future of Galway and of my country. In securing improvements in various fields my ultimate objective will be a positive amelioration of the quality of life for each and every Galwegian. Therefore the
