Corrib Lions Club supports footballer in Zambian project
BY JULIE TIERNEY The Corrib Lions Club, Oranmore has made a donation to Alan Kerin's Zambian Project. In January/February of this year Galway footballer and physiotherapist, Alan Kerins visited the Cheshire Home in Mongu to lend his support. Mongu, a township on the edge of the Kalahari desert of Zambia with poor sandy soil and extreme poverty is one of the poorest areas in the provence. The region is ravaged by HIV/Aids which is decimating the population, in many cases leaving grandparents to look after the orphaned children. Most of Kerin's time in Mongu was spent helping as a physiotherapist and rehabiliting physically handicapped children in the Cheshire Home which acts as a facility to help rehabilitate disabled children. "Such was the impact of my experience that I feel compelled and motivated to continue to do everything I can to help sustain these projects," said Kerins on his return. Subsequently, he has launched several aggressive fundraising campaigns around the county and is also talking to the Government in the hope of getting funding to sink boreholes for wells in Mongu. In response to this campaign The Corrib Lions Club recently presented Kerin's with a 3,000 cheque towards the fund.
