City break
Dubrovnik is a wonderful city and an ideal city break. One of the highlights is to walk by the massive city medieval walls which surround the old town -- now a UNESCO world heritage site. Fahy Travel has two weekend breaks at the end of the month (October 22 and 29) for three nights at the Grand Hotel for 384 including return flights, transfers, and a guide book. This hotel is situated near the beach on the peninsula of Lapad. All rooms are airconditioned and have a balcony with beach or garden view. Full details from Fahy Travel on (091) 594747.

October 14 -- Holy day of Callistus, aka Pope Callistius I. As a youth and slave he worked in a sort of bank and lost the money deposited with him; after many adventures he returned to Rome and was elected Pope; whereupon he was attacked by St Hippolytus for among other things believing that commission of mortal sin was not in itself sufficient reason for deposing a bishop. According to some, he died after being thrown down a well during a popular uprising. In Norway, where his day marked the beginning of winter, he is represented by a leafless tree, a papal staff, or a mitten. This last symbol though derived from the papal glove, also symbolises winter. October 15 -- Holy day of St Teresa of Avila, foundress of the discalced Carmelites. She joined a rather relaxed Carmelite house in 1535, and only in 1555 was converted to stricter observance while praying before a statue of Christ being scourged. From that point, she began to experience ecstasies, vividly portrayed by Bernini in his sculpture group of St Teresa and the spear-bearing angel in San Maria della Vittoria in Rome. Her desire to found a stricter Carmelite house met with great opposition, but she succeeded in 1562; the Discalced Carmelites (who wear sandals instead of shoes), for both men and women, resulted. In her convent of St Joseph in Avila, she wrote her spiritual autobiography, a manual for her nuns, The Way of Perfection, and numerous other works, including poetry. Forceful and capable as an administrator, she was also a mystic writer of the first importance. She was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1970 and Pope Paul VI named her patron of Spanish Catholic writers in 1965.

Toronto & Niagara Falls
be elephant proof is not for the faint hearted. The transport system is excellent with trams, buses, and trains at very reasonable rates. Take a harbour cruise or a ferry over to the islands where you can laze the days away. Or perhaps you'd like to take in a game of baseball at the Sky dome? China Town, water parks, theme parks, shopping... Toronto really has it all. It is only a one hour transfer by coach to Niagara so we took a helicopter ride over the falls which was the highlight of the week for me. You can also get up close to the falls on the Maid of the Mist but be prepared to get wet! And when the sun goes down there is still plenty to do -- you can visit the

There is so much to see. The CN Tower is a must, this is the tallest free standing building in the world and the views from it are amazing. The glass floor which is supposed to
