Half of road crashes are alcohol related, says WHB chief ahead of New Year
BY MARY O'CONNOR The chief executive of the Western Health Board is urging revellers not to drink and drive after they ring in the new year warning that half the crashes on the roads are alcohol related. Dr Sheelah Ryan says it is important to act responsibly during the festive season. "For many, this is an enjoyable experience, a time of high spirits, meeting up with friends and attending many social events. It is important to remember that this should mean we partake in sensible drinking which is enjoyable, sociable and responsible. It includes not drinking at all in situations when the effects of alcohol will put someone's safety at risk." She says the concentration of alcohol in the body and the effects it has varies according to people's body weight, gender, tolerance and age. "It is important to remember that adults should remain within their recommended adult intake levels. One unit of alcohol equates to a glass of wine, a measure of spirits, a half pint of ordinary strength beer, lager or cider at 3.5 per cent volume or a glass of sherry or port." Alcohol lowers people's inhibitions and affects their judgement, she says. "Studies have shown that in the case of inexperienced drivers their judgment is affected long before their blood alcohol level reaches the legal limit. This year alone there have been over 300 deaths so far on our
