Women's `cock-and-bull' story does not impress judge
A woman who claimed she did not know the car her younger brother was driving had been stolen at the time she accepted a lift from him, was given a suspended sentence when she appeared before Galway District Court this week. Mother of six Bridget Mongan (33), from 44 Ard Alainn, Ballybane, Galway, denied she allowed herself to be carried in the stolen car on November 11 last year. Garda Ken Clancy said he followed the car, which was being driven erratically, into the Esso Station on the Dublin Road, Galway, at 2.45am. He approached the car and noticed immediately that the car was hotwired. There were four people in the vehicle, including Bridget Mongan, and coaccused, Julia Mongan (21), from 47 Beal Sruatha. They gave no explanation for being there, he said. Both accused told the court they were walking to a shop to buy cigarettes when the car pulled up and the driver offered them a lift. They knew the driver and a male front seat passenger and accepted the lift because it was a cold winter's night. Judge Mary Fahy said their evidence was a cockand-bull story and if that was the best they could think up it wasn't much. Convicting both women the judge said she felt they were taking the wrap for the two men found in the car. (Bench warrants were issued for their arrest earlier.) She sentenced Bridget Mongan to four months in prison, suspended for two years and fined her coaccused 500.
