Student's antics on St Patrick's night led to court and fine
A university student who looked as if butter wouldn't melt in his mouth in court and of whom a Judge said he would make a perfect candidate for giving out Communion, presented a different attitude when he refused to move in off a busy street for a garda who was trying to control a large crowd queuing outside a city centre night club on St. Patrick's night, Galway District Court heard this week. Vincent Walsh, Ard Clar, Claremorris, Co Mayo, who was in court with his mother, pleaded guilty to being drunk and a danger to traffic at Forster Street, Galway on St Patrick's night and also to refusing to leave the area when directed to do so by a garda. Garda Damien Gormley said a taxi driver alerted him that a large crowd queuing to get into a night club had spilled out onto the street and he arrived to find some 100 people out on the roadway. Garda Gormley said he set about moving people back onto the footpath, but Walsh stood in his way and refused to move. The garda had to go further up the street to move the crowd in and when he returned he observed Walsh still in the middle of the street where he was nearly hit by a car. Walsh later apologised for his behaviour, the garda added. Defence solicitor Jarlath McInerney said his client was a science student who had taken time out to help in the family business. This incident, he said, had upset his whole family. Judge Mary Fahy asked to see the accused and when he stood up, looking very embarrassed and dressed in shirt and tie, she commented, "Looking at him now you would think butter wouldn't melt in his mouth. He looks like he could be giving out Communion, but it was a different matter on the night," she said before fining Walsh 300 for failing to leave the area for the Garda and 100 for being a danger to traffic
