Sample Chinese S h o w your true medicine at c o l o u r s for charity Merlin Park Hospital
BY MARY O'CONNOR BY MARY O'CONNOR THE PUBLIC can sample traditional Chinese therapy performed by visiting medical doctors at an open day being held in Galway next week. The event will be held at the Irish Wheelchair Centre at Unit 10, Merlin Park Hospital on Wednesday August 27 from 11am to 7pm. The open day is being organised by the Irish Wheelchair Association in conjunction with the Chinese Disabled Federation in Beijing. Eamonn Cotter, the manager of Chinese therapies for the IWA, says Chinese traditional holistic therapy is one of the most treasured heritages of Chinese medicine and dates back more than 3,000 years. "This particular therapy is called Tui-Na and is an extremely important part of traditional Chinese medicine for treating trauma and injury. It is world famous because of its amazing outcomes. The method used is a form of medical manipulation of pressure points and energy channels known as meridians. Through this manipulation. bodily illness can be totally cured and where no illness is present the treatment will build up the body's energy and immune system." This therapeutic massage is especially suitable for curing injuries from falls, fractures, contusions, strains, or soft tissue damage to muscles, tendons and ligaments, he says. "Tui-Na can activate the vital energy and blood supply, loosen muscles and joints, relax tendons, reduce swelling and relieve pain. It will fluently promote the replenishment of lymph and blood and improve the metabolism of the body." Other conditions which can be successfully treated include those of the nervous respiratory and urinary system, bronchitis, digestive, muscular, gynaecological and muscular problems." "This therapy can also treat weight loss problems, optical and dental conditions and infantile MS and cerebral palsy." The Irish Wheelchair Association decided to open the event to the public because of the success of a previous open day for its own members. "When we invited some Chinese doctors to Ireland a few years ago to give our members the benefit of this therapy, we found it to be so successful and helpful that staff in the many centres throughout the country wished to avail of the services. Then, the general public also became interested. We decided to hold regular clinics for the public. This is a means by which to fund the service already being given to our members and is not a commercial venture." These weekly clinics are already in operation in Athlone, Roscommon, Tuam, Mullingar and in the near future in Galway at the IWA Centre in Merlin Park. "If the public response is good and the people of Galway avail of this new and exciting service, then it would be arranged for a regular weekly clinic to be held here every Wednesday from 3pm to 7pm. Typical sessions last for 30 minutes to one hour. Clients, who remain fully clothed during the treatment, are asked to wear loose clothing and no shoes. While people do not need to book for the open day, an appointment is necessary for further sessions. To book ( 091)771562 or (087) 6240232
