World Cup woe filled U C H G casualty department
ALCOHOL WAS a major factor in more than 50 per cent of cases treated at the casualty department of UCHG during the World Cup Finals in June 2002. Research conducted by John O' Donnell. an accident and emergency consultant at the hospital, revealed that 47 patients attended the A & E department at that lime. They suffered from a variety of conditions directly related to the event. The majority involved minor trauma such as assaults or falls. Alcohol was a problem in over hall' the patients. Dr Sheelah Ryan, the chief executive of the WHB told this month's meeting of the hoard. She said 38 of the patients attended within 24 hours of the Ireland match. The overall impact of the World Cup related attendances at the hospital's emergency department was limited, unlike that experienced by hospitals in the cast of the country, she explained. Dr O'Donnell's research was published in the Irish Medical Journal recently. Commenting on the study. Cllr Des Bruen (Rose) described the research as interesting. He said he would have anticipated thai admissions would have been higher and was glad the west was not following in the footsteps of the east. He said it would be an interesting exercise to find out the number of alcohol related admissions on a monthly basis. He did not want to create extra work for hospital authorities hut said it would be interesting if these figures could be available. -- MARY O'CONNOR
