Inspector Sean Healy told the court that Ward entered Creaven's Video Shop, Main Street, Headford on May 6 last. He leaned in over the counter and told a young girl there be had a knife and he would harm her if she didn't hand over money from the till. The owner of the shop, Shane Creaven, had been at the doorway and he saw what was happening. Ward grabbed some money and made his getaway. His flat was later searched but none of the money taken was recovered, the inspector said. Inspector Healy said that on a different date Ward was observed on a video tape taking a bag from a bar in a Galway city hotel. He ran from the scene but gardai gave chase and Ward was caught at Prospect Hill, where the bag and its contents were recovered. Ward, the court heard, had failed to turn up in court on two separate dates to face the charges. He had previous convictions for larceny, producing a weapon in the course of a dispute, for which he had been sentenced to five years in 1999, and for forgery. Defending solicitor, Michael McDarby said his client had a very serious drink problem and until such time as he dealt with that nothing would change. He said Ward only pretended to have a knife when he went into the video shop. Judge David Anderson asked Ward what age he was. Ward replied that he was 22. His solicitor reminded him that he was 23 going on 24. Judge Anderson then sentenced Ward to eight months for stealing the handbag, and 10 months, to run consecutively, for the Headford offence. He sentenced Ward to a further four months, to run concurrently for failing to turn up in court on two previous occasions.
