St George oyster fishery leased to Clarinbridge Co-op
THE CLARINBRIDGE Co-op saw a 130-year wait come to an end last week when it signed lease papers for the St George oyster fishery. The lease of the facility from Bord Iascaigh Mhara brings the fishery back into the hands of the people of Clarinbridge for the first time since 1872. The fishery was given to local landowners, the St iCeorge family, by the inspector of Irish fisheries in the late 19th century. The move sparked a 100-year battle which saw court cases, imprisonments, and threatened hunger strikes as the people fought for the return of their marine resource. BIM purchased the facility in 18 at the behest 91 of the State, and has worked closely with the local community on research and development work since the fishery's purchase. Further developments are planned which will boost production and employment at the facility. The co-op will also work to conserve and enhance the fishery. Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources Frank Fahey, who oversaw the signing of the lease, which will be effective for a minimum of five years, welcomed the return of the resource to the local community. "Knowing the area and its people as well as I do, I am aware of the deeply rooted sense of injustice that the ownership of the oyster beds has evoked over the last 130 years," he said. "I am delighted that this valuable resource is now being handed back to local people to manage and develop for the benefit of the local community."
