Two others who deserve the same credit are Ger Conway and Billy Kelly the former Galway and Milltown goalkeeper. The leagues since their inauguration in 1966 have become a great feature of Salthill life. Long may they continue to be so.

A.G.M.
HILLTOP HOTEL SALTHILL Monday 3rd July 8.30 p.m. Sharp ALL WELCOME U.C.G. AIRDOME SPORTS HALL In these days of long, drawn out forward planning and time consumed in obtaining planning approval and funding for the provision of buildings surely a record must have been established at U.C.G. in t h e e r e c t i o n of a temporary Sports Hall virtually over the lunch time period on Thursday, 23 rd June. Low and behold a baloon type structure had appeared on the horizon at the rear of the University Club during lunch hour. On enquiry I established that Gerry Lee who is in charge of Physical D e v e l o p m e n t at the U n i v e r s i t y had t h e answers. He first thought of this idea back in 1975 having seen a number of similar structures in use for a multiplicity of purposes in the U.K. However it took considerable time to have the principle of the provision of the Airhall structure as a games room accepted and approved. Planning approval and funding for the structure had been approved earlier this year and foundation work and the provision of a suitable floor had been made over the last few weeks in anticipation of construction of the Hall on Thursday last. The structure which consists of a P.V.C. fabric is dome shaped. It is held in position by a peripheral anchor ring beam and inflated by differential heated air pressur. It covers a total area in excess of 7,000 sq. ft. The structure, which has a translucent dome, will be used for the playing of indoor games in a well lit, heated environment free from the elements. The Hall is 36 metres by 18 metres, will accommodate tennis, badminton, volley ball, net ball, basket ball, 5 - a - s i d e soccer and hockey, table tennis and indeed o t h e r indoor athletics. Access is being provided from existing dressing . room, shower, toilet and other ancillary facilities at the University Club and the Hall should prove a great boon, particularly during the winter months for s t u d e n t s and staff participating in these games. The structure will also have artificial lighting and space heating.

MOTORING
LOVE WINS CASTROL AUTOCROSS Dub liner Noel Love won the Galway Motor Club's r o u n d of the Castrol National Autocross championship at Loughrea by a wide margin. Love drove a VW Special, and caused major surprises all round in a day that suited the engine over the driven wheels to put the engine power onto the slippery ground. There were 53 starters for the event, and the winning margin was almost ten seconds after three laps of a tight course. The conditions allowed almost comparable times from the Minis up to 1050 cc. Following the Galway round, the Castrol Championship series unofficially shows Billy Cavanagh to have extended his lead (18 p o i n t s ) from Mick Culleton and Tom Farrell (16). Gordon Lennox is fourth (14), Olive Hayes (13) and Pat Duffy and John Flynn tying for sixty (12 points).

RAS TAILTEANN Ras Tailteann came to .Galway last Sunday and t h e 15 lap Kermesse (round the houses) race was a very exciting spectacle. The race arrived from Killimor (Shannon Ferry) at 2.30 p.m. Then a quick cup of tea courtesy of the Ladies Committee and Fr. Ralph Lawless O.F. And then back to Eyre Square at 5 p.m. for the thrills and spills of street cycling. The real danger of the sport was all too obvious at Moon's Corner and at The Small Crane. Still there were no major accident and the local organisation was a credit to Paddy Mannion, Peter Walsh and John F. King. OTHER GAMES More counties are falling out of the championship race. Biggest surprise last week was the defeat of Laois by Offaly. The latter now go on to meet Dublin at the same venue I u n d e r s t a n d . Don't be surprised if Offaly bring off a surprise.
