Sarsfields and 'CasheF Look Safe
Unless there is a m ^ r upset, Castlegar and Sarsfields are safely through to the Galway Senior Hurling Championship quarter-finals. Castlegar regained their composure to account for Killimordaly last weekend after Abbeyknockmoy ran them to a point in the previous championship clash. Gerry Broderick, Michael Healy, Conor MoUoy and Michael Connolly were the backbone of the Castlegar side. Their forwards, who had several wides, were slow in putting away the Killimordaly side. However Killimordaly relied too much on Kerril Greavan to keep them in touch. Champions Sarsfields proved too strong for a Mullagh side which is in the process of rebuilding and now faces relegation. Two goals from Michael McGrath and Petar Cooney put Sarsfields on the road to an easy victory. Gort defeated neighbours Kinvara, who were reduced to 14 men in the second half, while the young Clarenbridge side handed the first defeat to Kilconieron. County wing back Michael Donoghue scored the vital goal 20 minutes into the game, which proved to be a turning point for Clarenbridge. After their dismal first round outing against Castlebar, Turloughmore regained some pride to draw with Abbey-Duniry. Turloughmore were 0 - 10 to 0 - 8 in front three minutes from time when Duniry keeper Kevin Devine smashed home a 21 yard free to the net. Francis Forde then equalised with a free after Diarmuid Moore was fouled. This game provided one of the most spectacular points in years when Turloughmore centre back Cathal Moore soloed out of defSnce and from inside bis own half put the ball over the bar. Last year's finalists Portumna kept on target when they edged out Loughea in a fiercely competitive game. Loughrea had the chance to draw level, but the normally reliable Michael Haverty sent a last-minute free wide. This group is still open.

Wilson o n Song For Killereran
Apart from Oranmore/Maree's victory over Salthill, there were no m^jor surprises at other venues in the football championship opening round last Sunday. Mountbellew/Moylough, without the services of Val Daly, lost out for a second successive year in the first round when they went down to Moyculien by a single point. The losers relied too heavily on the services of Alan Duffy, who scored 11 of their 12 points. Recently-crowned league champions made hard work of defeating Monivea/Abbey at Menlough. Monivea were in command in the early stages courtesy of a Gerry Daly goal. Tommy Wilson was on song for Kilereran and he sealed victory with a late goal. Tuam Stars' experience and craft was too much for Clonbur A Willie Brogan goal in the fourth minute set up the Tuam Stars' victory.
