The Mayor Padraic McCormack led the City Council to ace, all in formal robes, sled by the Citys Sword Mace. le Church Of Ireland represented by Rev. i Neill Bishop of Tuam, seemed to be h u g e l y enjoying himself. T.V. monitors throughout the Cathedral and outside, allowed everyone to follow the service in detail. The imaginative gifts, representing the different parishes in the diocese were presented to the new bishop while the group Dardan played traditional Irish music. After the ceremony Bishop James went out of the Cathedral and was practically mobbed by well wishers. Eventually he was taken by car to the reception at St. Marys led by the Presentation Girls Band. Bishop James surrounded
Killaia and Achonry. There was also the Bishop of Limerick, local Church of Ireland pastors. The Presbyterian and Methodist community were represented by Rev. Alan Macaulay. There were 20 bishops, representatives of the Hierarchies of England, Wals and Scotland, and many other Church disnitaries including representatives from the 39 parishes in the Diocese. The bishops two brothers were present: Fr. Aidan and Dermot his wife Joan and family. The whole of Cross Street where the Bishop was born were there. The street itself was ablaze with flags and bunting.

Fr. Eamonn Mclnerney PP Enistymon who introduced the ceremony, recalled that in 1937 as a

Mary, the Mother of God, is depicted on the left hand side of the coat of arms. She is patroness of the diocese of Galway. The right hand side of the coat of arms recalls the coming together of three ancient Church com munities. Galway city is depicted by its patron, St. Nicholas, and the three maidens whom he helped. The book and conier refer to the founder of the diocese of Kilmacduagh, St. Co/man. The rose recalls an incident in the life of St. Fachtna, patron of the diocese of Kilfenora.
