Asthma is on the increase. It affects one in eight children and one in 20 adults. Three quarters of asthmatics get their first attack in childhood. Yet many asthmatic children go undetected - by parents, teachers and even doctors.
A recent survey of schoolchildren found that IS p e r cent of y o u n g asthmatics had previously been un d i a g n o s e d and u n t r e a t e d . T h e result w a s a high degree o f disability a m o n g t h o s e c h i l d r e n c a u s i n g a lot o f restrictions in their lifestyle. T h e A s t h m a Society o f Ireland say the c o m m o n r e a s o n for this o v e r s i g h t is that a s t h m a c o m e s and g o e s . A c h i l d o r adult w h o spent the p r e v i o u s night w h e e z i n g or p a s p i n g for b r e a t h may w e l l t u r n u p at t h e doctor's s u r g e r y n e x t d a y l o o k i n g fit and healthy. A s t h m a is c a u s e d by a n a r r o w i n g o f d i e a i r w a y s in the lungs, which m a k e you feel w h e e z y o r b r e a t h l e s s . It c a n a l s o result in a p e r sistent c o u g h o r a feeling of tightness in t h e c h e s t . " I t ' s frustrating for d o c tors because w e k n o w w e c a n d o s o m u c h a b o u t it, if only w e ' r e g i v e n a c h a n c e . " W i t h a s t h m a on the in c r e a s e in I r e l a n d and t h r o u g h o u t the w o r l d , the chances of a non-asthmatic m e e t i n g u p w i t h this situa tion is i n c r e a s i n g all the time." T h e A s t h m a Society has launched an Asthma educa tion and information campaign. " O u r o b j e c t i v e is t o let people know about asthma, h o w it c a n b e r e c o g n i s e d , treated and h o w sufferers, in m o s t c a s e s , g o o n t o live healthy l i v e s . " T h e A s s o c i a t i o n will t a r g e t s c h o o l s particularly b e c a u s e it is often a c h i l d ' s inability t o p a r t i c i p a t e in school activities that signals t h e possibility o f a n a s t h m a problem.
