SPOTLIGHT ON S P O R T
GALWAY GOLF C L U B Sunday, 14th July, Bank of Ireland T r o p h y , 18 h o l e mixed foursomes, stroke. Winner: D . M c S w e e n e y (6) and Mrs. S. Kearney (8) 67. Runners-up: P . D o n n e l lan (6) and Miss E. O'Beirn 68. Third: J. Ryan (17) and Mrs. B. Duffy (16) 68.1. Gross: G. Kelly and M r s . P. Carey 83 (on 2nd 9). Big event of the year takes place on Sunday next w h e n the Captain's (E. C . C o o k e ) Prize will be played for. It will be an 18 hole stableford and in addition to the overall prize, there will b e three prizes in each of three g r o u p ings, according to handicaps. Let's hope that the weather will be kind. Incidentally, only full members are eligible to play. T h e r e will be a Captain's Prize for Juniors (under 18 years) o n Saturday next when the first tee, will be reserved from 11 a.m. to 12 for those taking part. T h e annual triangular Knights of the Road Societies (Galway, Athlone and Sligo) competitiion for the M a x w e l l House T r o p h y was held o n Saturday last. Based o n t h e best 6 cards from e?ch S o c iety, the f c p h y was w o n by Galway with a scoro of 235 Upontr.. T i e Galway prize winners were Pat McNamara/Tcm Byrne and Seamus M c E v o y / J o h n R y a n , but the leading pair in the competition (18 holes better ball fourball stableford) were from Sligo. Over 60 took part altogether, and a rousing Knight's night followed the competition. Galway's Senior C u p team to meet Sligo on Saturday next in the Provincial final is as follows: D . M a h o n , T . O'Connor, P. H e n n e l l y , J. Corless and G. M o l l o y . First sub. is Robert Scott. Here's wishing them the best of luck. With the result of o n e match still undecided, G a l way's Pearse Purcell t e a m -- playing at home--lead Castlebar by 3 matches to 1 in the Provincial final. Another five matches have to be played in Castlebar and the aggregate score will count. T h e weather was again a spoil sport for a great n u m b e r of those w h o played in last Sunday's mixed foursomes for the Bank of Ireland Trophy. Whether this was the reason or not, I don't know but two short handicap pairings were first and second despite the fact that this was a stroke competition. It was rather a coincidence that t h e first three pairs all had 37 shots for the first n i n e holes. Without taking in any way from the first two pairs, Joe Ryan and Brid Duffy m u s t be kicking themselves for their very bad second n i n e . After going out in 37, they took 48 shots for the h o m e ward journey to be beaten by only JA shots. T h e winning pair, D e n i s McSweeney and Shiela Kearney, played immaculate golf in a round that included 4 birdies and 7 pars. T h a t ' s some golf, I assure y o u , especially in a m i x e d . Jimmy D u g g a n , Galway's star forward, breaking through in effortless fashion last Sunday.

TENNIS T h e first annual challenge between the married and the single players in the club took place last Saturday. The younger and more virile single team achieved a narrow victory over their more mature opponents. T h e final score was 13 matches to 11 but the match could have been drawn had not a certain well known male member of the married outfit found the stresses of the matrimonial state too great to play his second match but it must be said that he did play a major part in securing one victory for the marrieds. T h e climax of the season will be reached next week w h e n Galway Open Week takes place. If anyone inter ested in playing in it has not completed an entry form please collect one from the club in Threadneelde Road, fill it in immediately and gitfe it to a committee member. It promises to be a good week with the finals taking place o n Saturday afternoon. M a n y members are pre paring for the tournament by picking u p tips from John Horn, the Irish national coach. About eighty players are benefitting from his coach ing this week and doubtlessly this will show itself in some improved play next Week.

People living o n their o w n especially old people -- should have a chain fitted to their front door and remember always to use it.

French windows can make the burglars job all too* easy. They should always be fitted with strong bolts top and bottom as well as a key-operated lock or bolt in the middle -- with the key kept well out of reach.

Housewives should beware of callers claiming to be meter-readers or salesmen, who may be hoping to steal something whilst they are in the house, or checking to see if it is worth breaking into later. Before going on holiday, cancel all deliveries in person, do not write notes and leave them on the door, and if possible ask a neighbour or the police to keep an eye on your home.

If a house is left empty during the evening, it will look less deserted if a light is left on, not the hall light however, as this makes it obvious that everyone has gone out.

Many sneak thieves get away scot-free because they work unnoticed by other people. Very often the explanation is that neighbours hate to be thought busy bodies. This is understandable, but if you ever hear or see anything suspicious it is always a good idea to call the police -- quietly -- even if it turns out to be a false alarm. Y o u would feel grateful if a neighbour did the same for you under similar circumstances.

IN

THE' CAR

In the vast majority of accidents, both parties are at fault to some degree - although of course, each is often convinced that he is blameless.

If a damaged car is insured under a comprehensive policy, an engineer may make an inspection before instructing a repairer to put the job in hand. Insurers try to make their Inspections as soon as they hear of a claim.

Sometimes a car is damaged beyond economical repair. In these circumstances, the insurance company will pay the market value of the car.
